It took us a thousand years. A thousand years since Ethelstan united the kingdom and then we went through centuries of rebellions and civil wars to carve out a form of reasonable , effective Government. A thousand years of brutal capital and corporal punishments,often for minor crimes, to make us a peaceful, civilized society . And so over a hundred years ago we could become a liberal tolerant society. Capital punishment was limited to the most serious of crimes and then eliminated altogether as was corporal punishment . Custodial sentences became shorter, rarer and less harsh. You could say we suspended the sentences not the criminals. This is the society that I was born into , grew up in and was proud to be a part of . I was liberal, tolerant and forgiving . But then our rulers threw it all away. They imported hordes of savages into our land and insisted that we tolerated their savagery instead of demanding that they behaved like us . So now, once more, we live in a savage land and if we are to survive and become peaceful again we must once again fight savagery with savagery of our own . The authorities could make a start by rounding up a few of these looters and provide immediate ‘suspended sentences’ from nearly lamp posts, leaving their bodies up to rot over the summer as an example to others ? Sometimes the old ways are the best?
