While your batchmate is running floor to floor looking for an ABG syringe, you've already poked, collected, and sent it. While the new intern is opening every drawer in the OT like a treasure hunt, you've already handed the Ambu bag to the senior. While someone is arguing with the store sister at midnight that "system shows it's in stock," you already know the backup stock is in the third shelf of Ward 7 because you noticed it last Tuesday. You'll look like a genius. You're not. You just paid attention. And it's not just supplies. Know which lab does which test - because at 1 AM when you need a D-dimer and the intern is wandering between pathology and biochemistry like a lost first-year, that's a critical delay on a suspected PE patient. Know that nerve conduction studies happen in physiology, not medicine. That the special coagulation profilr goes to haematology, not the routine lab. That fluid for ADA goes to biochemistry, not microbiology - and if you send it wrong, that pleural tap you struggled 20 minutes to get is now wasted. Nobody will hand you this map. Build it yourself. Know the people, not just the departments. For a tricky ECG, there's always that one cardiology senior who actually explains instead of just saying "correlate clinically." For a confusing CT, there's one radiology resident who picks up the phone and walks you through it, and another one who'll ghost your call every single time. For ortho opinions at night, one consultant replies in 2 minutes, the other one you'll grow old waiting for. Know who's who. Your batchmates will waste hours chasing the wrong people. You'll get answers in minutes because you know exactly whom to call. Know your hospital like you know your home. Every cabinet, every store room, every shortcut corridor, every department's quirks, every person worth calling. The resident who finds things fast and knows who to call doesn't just look smart - in the right moment, that resident saves lives while others are still asking "excuse me sister, where can I find this?"
