Socialism always sounds good in theory because the theory assumes the people controlling everything will be competent, honest, and willing to give that power back. They usually are not. And once the state controls your property, your livelihood, and your choices, reclaiming what you surrendered becomes incredibly difficult, if not impossible, unless outside forces act for you. Capitalism has flaws and deserves criticism. But pointing out those flaws does not magically make socialism the answer. Capitalism wins because it doesn’t require perfect people to make it work. It channels self-interest into competition, innovation, investment, and production, and the proof is visible in the societies that have created the most wealth, lifted the most people out of poverty, and given ordinary citizens the greatest freedom to build lives of their own. In summary: capitalism is imperfect. But socialism is much worse.

@tokertim @notgaetti According to Forbes the Pirates revenue for 2024 was $326 million. There are 10 teams that have revenue over $100 million higher than that. If the Pirates are the most profitable team in baseball I see nothing wrong with that since they are so far behind in the revenue race.

For instance, Bob Nutting makes an ass ton of money every year because the system doesn’t require you to field a competitive team in order to run a profitable one. Pittsburgh is a relatively cheap city to exist in and fielding a better team would only cut into his bottom line.
Foul Territory@FoulTerritoryTV

"The smaller market, lower revenue teams, in general, are the most profitable teams in baseball." MLBPA Interim Executive Director Bruce Meyer believes it would be "eye-opening" for fans to see how much some teams profit from revenue sharing under the current system.

@tokertim @notgaetti I don’t claim to know all sources of revenue. It seems pretty logical to compare local broadcast revenue and conclude the Pirates are not generating anywhere near the revenue the big spenders in MLB are generating.

@therealmolson @notgaetti how could you possibly claim to know the "amount of profit they get from all sources of revenue"?

If the Pirates increased payroll by the amount of profit they get from all sources of revenue they still wouldn’t come close to the payroll the top 10 or so teams have. They would still lose Skenes even if they spend every dime of profit on payroll. Then they aren’t competitive and they are not profitable. Why would anyone sign up for that? At least in the current system they are able to make a profit otherwise they would be crazy to keep operations going.

@Ostrakon451 @TimePreference_ Mayor of New York is a Democratic Socialist correct? He believes in rent control and government control of the means of production. That’s communism with new marketing.

@TimePreference_ Democratic socialism isn’t communism. It is democracy with the belief that everyone should have a place to live, food and healthcare when they get sick. Perhaps with paid vacations, education and child care that doesn’t bankrupt you. Denmark doesn’t have a politburo.

@theobjectivist New York already has units that are city owned and from what I’ve read complaints are mostly about broken appliances that have needed repair for a very long time. Glad I own my home and don’t have to live in a government owned building.

Yes, your rent is frozen. So is the landlord's budget to fix your heat, your leaks, and your broken freezer. But don't worry, when nothing works, at least the number on your lease stays the same. You can admire it while you eat out. And the rent won't rise, true. Neither will any new buildings, because no one builds apartments he's forbidden to price. So enjoy the same aging unit for the next thirty years, paying yesterday's rent for tomorrow's ruins. Freezing a price doesn't freeze reality. It freezes the supply, halts the repairs, and ends the building, while the line of people waiting for an apartment grows longer every year. But feel the warmth of collectivism: everyone equal, shivering together in identical crumbling units, sharing the broken elevator and the dead freezer as one community. The number stays the same. That was the promise, and that is all you'll get.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

It might be hot outside but the rent is freezing.

I hear more large market fans complaining about small market owners not spending than I hear small market fans complaining about that. My attitude is if the small market teams can’t generate the revenue to compete with big market teams spending sprees then there’s nothing wrong with small market teams trying to maximize profit over trying to win at a game that is rigged against them. Small market owners maximizing profits seems to offend the big market fan bases and that amuses me.

Explain this to me. Small market fans are upset at their owners for not spending So they turn around and back the owners proposal? If you think the owners care about competitive balance more than lining their pockets, I have a bridge to sell you

You can basically bank 100% on a lockout next season. The owners are proposing things that will NEVER be agreed on by the players. This is baaaaad. They are so far apart. #mlb

BREAKING: In its next CBA, the league is proposing a max contract length of 5 yrs for free agent players switching teams, 6 years to retain their own players. No deferred contracts. Qualifying offer is gone too. Also, 5 years to free agency for players 30 or older.

The money is confiscated regardless of how it is invested in the years prior to retirement. I, for one, am angry that I was not allowed to invest the money confiscated from me into a growth vehicle like an index fund. That is probably going to mean I have at least 500K less in retirement because I was denied that choice. The Republicans suck for failing to fight for the right to invest our money as we saw fit.

@swd2 How much value does a team that doesn’t generate profits and doesn’t win because they are outspent by the highest revenue generating teams actually have? The value of the teams that don’t spend is their ability to generate profit.

If baseball does have a problem, the solution isn’t a salary cap. The problem is cheap owners who buy a franchise and try to run it as a business. It’s not a business in a traditional sense. You make your money in 15 or 20 years when you sell the club for 5x-10x the price.

Get rid of the teams that don’t generate enough revenue to compete and you can have all the free market capitalism you desire. Expecting the teams that don’t generate anywhere near the revenue the Yankees generate to be used as a farm system for the revenue generators is delusional.

@BenRossTweets Contraction to 10 to 12 revenue generating teams solves for “bad” owners. I would be a “bad” owner. If I can’t compete with the largest revenue generators spending then I would look to maximize profits.
