MIT’s new design uses integrated optical phased arrays steering infrared light electronically across a scene like a sci-fi radar system. But here’s the breakthrough: Previous chip-based lidar systems suffered from “grating lobes” and antenna crosstalk, creating false objects and limiting peripheral vision. MIT engineered a new antenna geometry that reduced coupling from ~100% down to ~1%. Result: A compact solid-state lidar chip that can scan wide angles with a single clean beam.
