@TheCartoonLoon Assuming all votes are essentially randomized your child has 3/4 (75%) outcomes leading to surviving. Choosing blue gives you 1/2 (50%) outcomes of surviving. Is it really optimal to choose an option that's more likely to leave your child as an orphan than both survive?

So here is the thing Red voters Can you trust your children to pick red to save themselves? A vote for blue either ensures they live or you die trying to save them
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@tenobrus In what way is this not a win for red pushers too? They also get the optimal outcome, but did so without any risk.

@BullandBaird Do I scale down proportionally? Being 12" tall with millions of dollars could be kind of cool but not if my width stays the same.

You have a button you can press. Each time you press it you get $1 million but you also lose 1 inch of height. how many times are you pressing it?

@catboyautist If you know that the majority of people will press blue then your vote is irrelevant because blue will win no matter what.

If the group was only informed participants, 18 or over, with no disabilities, I would press red in a heartbeat. However you have to consider that a large chunk of the earths population are not logicians and cannot work out game theory or just randomly have a 50% chance of pressing blue as a baby would. If you want to save these people, and you know that the vast majority of other informed people want to save these people, then blue becomes the only choice.

@DerekPederson3 Red makes even more sense at lower thresholds. Easier for blues to win so the risk of anyone dying is much lower. Less people dying if blue still loses. Either way I'm not going to intentionally put myself at risk because people decided to press a 'maybe die' button.

@HairyLeggdHarpy Red, the data indicates high likelihood everyone will survive regardless of my vote. On the off chance blue loses, I still don't die. The only way red is the wrong decision is if everyone else votes on a perfect 50/50 split and I have the deciding vote which is very unlikely.

Just before you press your button of choice, you're informed that in almost every hypothetical trial run of this poll, whether online or real life, the population has chosen blue above red. You fact check this. It's true. Your loved ones have already voted. What do you press?

@sip_of_coffee4 @waitbutwhy I think a majority of people would choose red. If I'm right then blue is just a suicide button. If I'm wrong everyone lives. The only way picking blue would be a benefit is if the rest of the world splits exactly 50/50 and I have the deciding vote which is very unlikely.

@waitbutwhy Blue voter here to explain my thought process. I saw everyone survives if blue is 50%>, with red there's no guarantee everyone survives which made the choice easy (and I thought obvious). Curious to hear what a red voter thought?
