🚨BG (Ret.) Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr has been appointed the new SNSC Sec in Iran. This is big news and more proof of hardline military aka IRGC consolidation. This amassing of IRGC power and interest at the helm was not suddenly caused by the war, but rather decades of Khamenei’s policies of promoting security institutions over the regime’s “Islamic” and “Republican” ones. Yet there can also be no doubt that the war expedited and accelerated the ongoing trend of increasing IRGC control of the country. While you will read many bios of Ghalibaf these days, it is Zolghadr that will formally occupy the regime’s most important national security decision-making institution, and amid a war no less. Yet the big takeaway behind the rise of both Ghalibaf and Zolghadr is not just that we witnessing the overt influence of the IRGC and Iran-Iraq War veterans in the post-Khamenei Islamic Republic rump state, but the rise of people with zero experience in international relations and diplomacy. Good luck getting deescalation and deconfliction. Zolghadr was born in 1954 in the town of Fasa (Fars province) near the city of Shiraz in Iran. He received a BA in economics from the University of Tehran and was in guerrilla group (Mansouroun) prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Like many present military elite in the regime he served in the IRGC in the Iran-Iraq War. During the war Zolghadr specifically served as irregular warfare headquarters commander and led the Ramazan base. This expeditionary base collaborated with various Shiite militia groups. Post-war, Zolghadr served in various security and judicial capacities. For eight years after the war (1989-1997) Zolghadr served as the Chief of the IRGC’s joint-staff and for another eight years (1997-2005) as the deputy commander of the IRGC. Infamously, Zolghadr also supported the attack on reformists and the raid on the Tehran universe dormitory in 1999. Despite only briefly serving in the Ahmadinejad government as deputy interior minister, he later moved to serve in Sadegh Larijani’s judiciary first and an advisor and later as a deputy. Prior to becoming SNSC Sec, Zolghadr led the Expediency Council from 2021. Zolghadr replaces the frmr slain SNSC Sec Ali Larijani. This musical chairs nullifies rumors that former Sec Saeed Jalili would rise to re-lead the SNSC, as well as rumors surrounding the potential promotion of Bagheri-Kani. Interestingly, despite being on the UN 1747 sanctions list, and later subject to EU sanctions, Zolghadr has not been sanctioned by the US and is not on the SDN list.
