@teachthemx3 Kids who only spend time with other kids during playtime, but can't learn with other kids, have problems working with teams in the future. Cause that life lesson of seeing how others can learn at different paces or require unique approaches, will be new to them.

I had a new student in my Algebra II class. She was homeschooled previously, and this was her first experience in public school. Two days in, she’s already unerolling. I’m not surprised, given our last conversation. Her words when I asked her what she thought: “I wanted to see what all the hype was and maybe go to prom, but this isn’t for me. Most of class is spent waiting for everyone to open their Chromebooks or figure out what to do after the teacher has literally said it 5 times. And, I can’t use the bathrooms because of all the vaping.” I knew it wasn’t going to work when she brought back an entire unit packet (meant to be completed over 2 weeks) the next day. And no, she didn’t use AI. I asked her a few questions and she could explain the most difficult concepts verbally. She even offered her advice on how the sequencing of the packet could be improved.

@AbbasComputes Yes courage in academia is very scarce. Even more so than genius.

Academia has institutionalized infantilization. PhD students in their mid 20s are treated as kids. Researchers in their mid 30s are junior and need approval from seniors. It’s keeping adults in intellectual adolescence, and independence is delayed until they are obedient.

We keep hearing that this kind of fundamental research doesn't get funded. I ask, Why? Who decides it? Certainly not those on the panels who award funding based on review scores, in most cases, right? So, who are those expert reviewers in the field against fundamental research?

@richnanophd @chenna1985 Some things aren't matching in what you're saying. "Visionary" science is what got us here in the first place. "My AI/ML/digital whatever will revolutionize X" type proposals.

@chenna1985 Referees often reward incremental work over visionary science. The system needs more risk-tolerant reviewers who recognize disruption potential.

Something that I continuously see in #CFD benchmark of #DG for high order schemes is they compare #DG with #FVM at similar grid sizes. This is like comparing a Ferrari with a Chevrolet at the same speed; while the efficient configuration is not the same for that RPM and Speed.

@AbbasComputes I see. I am not surprised. DG community oversells. They can't do it if they don't claim novelty.

One might confuse FVM with the FDM. But, it's hard to understand how one might confuse FVM with FEM. 🤔🤔 One reason I can think of is that some write FEM equations node-wise, which is not how FEM is supposed to be understood and implemented. FEM should be looked at element-wise.
Hiroaki Nishikawa@HiroNishikawa

An author, who published many papers using the word "finite-volume", realized that it was not the right word because it's not really finite-volume but actually equivalent to a finite-element method. I have the same experience. Old papers can cause confusion.
