@maa_bhaishiiH Not sure if "indeed" is the correct way
I would translate it as "just this only" "keval yahi"
English

@AgentPaneer Yes. Indian languages have converged grammatically in lot of aspects, despite lot of families.
Tamil dhān = (kind of) Hindi hī
Hindi yah = this = Tamil idhu
Hindi yahī = this indeed / very this = Tamil dhān
Filipino

One of my friends is someone whose native is Hindi but has been living in Chennai for a few months and has been picking up Tamil. The kind of mistakes he makes are very revealing about how the human mind can easily pick up words but can’t easily unlearn a familiar system and replace it by another.
When I took him for shopping, he tried some Tamil. Normally, when you want to say “I want only this” in Tamil, you say “Idhu maṭṭum dhāṉ vēṇum” which literally translates to “this only indeed needed”. But the way he said it was “maṭṭum idhu dhāṉ vēṇum” which literally is “only this indeed needed”. What happened was that the word for “only” normally comes just before the verb towards the end in Tamil but he placed it as the very first thing in his speech. The reason is because his mother tongue Hindi places the word for “only” as the very first word in the sentence.
Hindi : sirf yahī (yah + hī) cāhiye
English literal translation : only this+indeed needed
What he did that led to the mistake was he used the Tamil words but according to Hindi grammar and syntax. He has picked up lot of Tamil words easily but still yet to pick up its structure (the order and usage of the words)
This is why words are just the first baby steps in learning the language. Words can easily be picked up and loanwords easily flow between languages. You can learn all the words of Chinese but yet still not speak an ordinary sentence correctly if you don’t pick up the grammar. For example, the guy in this article has memorised the entire French dictionary for winning Scrabble but can’t speak or compose a single sentence in French.

English

@AgentPaneer What I meant was that “sirf” tends to come earlier in Hindi than “maṭṭum” in Tamil which normally is closer to the verb (verb comes at the end) than in Hindi

@UnsureKris @RichardHanania So it's not about legal illegal immigration, that was a ruse. You people can't be expected to do anything right.
English

@RichardHanania Americans don't like the job market being flooded with desperate people happy to just be here suppressing wages for the benefit of robber barons. They used to make the Irish use the back door from the alley when ordering from restaurants and they don't make em whiter than that.
English

Indians are literally everything conservatives say they want in citizens.
But they're dark skinned.
So you basically get a perfect experiment.
Are people who complain about immigration just racist?
It turns out, the answer is yes.
John J.S. Soriano@JohnJSSoriano
94% of Indian immigrants with children are stably married, compared to 66% of white Americans. That is something they are doing right, not something you control away! This guy is holding it against Indians that their children grow up in stable families. Very conservative!

@Azali0001 @RichardHanania When u mix blue into a red "melting pot", it doesn't stay red, it becomes purple.
English

@RichardHanania Protecting the American way of life, cultures and traditions ia not racist ma dude. You think these Indians are assimilating when they are forming their bubbles and it to the country they left behind? Now thats racist. Why cant they assimilate?
English

@maa_bhaishiiH This happens for all kinds of things, depends on your circle.
For eg if ur ias, work in big tech, etc etc

Mathematics definitely has the worst PR ever. Almost every introductory conversation ends like this for me.
Someone : Hey, Rama. Nice to meet you. What do you do?
Me : Mathematics.
Someone : (says either of the following)
I am bad at math. (Me then : Okay, am bad at so many things too. What is the need to tell that here? I am also bad at what you do. Do I tell that after you tell me about what you do?)
Math is so boring / tough / difficult (Me then : so is playing a sport - what is your point?)
Wow, guess I should be careful with you. (Me then : Dude, I am not a ghost)
I had bad experience with it (Me then : okay; so what???)
How can you study math full time? (Me then : Dude, it is just math)
I told in my French class that I work on mathematics and every time I ask a doubt, my teacher is like : “You math guys always think ahead” or “Is this how you math guys think?”. Every time, I answer correctly, she be like “You are a mathematician; no wonder” and every time, I make a mistake, she is like “How can a mathematician make a mistake like this?”.
Why is my agency destroyed and being considered as a determinant of my profession and my personal idiosyncrasies generalised to my entire professional community?

@MrMohaSaid0 @IsabellaMWeber I agree that pre-Columbian Europe was pretty impoverished culinary-wise. Most of the their favorite staple crops (and for the world actually) come from the Americas.
I don't see the logic as to how that contributed to their intellectual flourishing
English

“For over 3000 years, Europe was at the centre of the political, cultural and economic universe.”
More like 200 years.

Wolfgang Munchau@EuroBriefing
By far the hardest thing for liberal Europeans to accept is the rise of a non-eurocentric world. Europeans can deal with the far-right, or Donald Trump's rants. But they cannot deal with being ignored. For over 3000 years, Europe was at the centre of the political, cultural and economic universe. It still thinks it is. eurointelligence.com

Open letter to Indians in America.
--
Dear brothers and sisters from Bharat:
Like I did 37 years ago, you arrived in America with no money but with a good education and cultural heritage from Bharat. You achieved outstanding success. America was good to us. For that we must remain grateful - gratitude is our Bharatiya way.
Yet today, a significant number of Americans, may be not the majority but not too far from it either, believe that Indians "take away" American jobs and our success in America was unfairly earned.
You may think the next election will fix this, but your choice would be between people who hate our Bharatiya civilisation and people who hate civilisation itself. That is the "hard right" vs "woke left" battle. You are mere bystanders to that conflict.
Meanwhile there is one thing that is true now and will be true in the future: the respect Indians command world-wide will substantially depend on the fortunes of India herself. If India remains poor, the woke left will give us moral lectures with pity and the hard right, different moral lectures with scorn ("hellhole") and we must not confuse either with respect.
Respect in today's world, along with prosperity and security, comes from one source: a nation's technological prowess. India produces sufficient brain power to achieve that prowess but alas we exported so much of that talent, particularly to America. As we develop that prowess in India, our civilisational strength will assert itself.
As difficult as it is for many of you to contemplate this, please come back home. Bharat Mata needs your talent. Our vast youthful population needs the technology leadership you gained over the years to guide them towards prosperity. Let's do it with a missionary zeal.
Respectfully
Sridhar Vembu

@SirTughlaq @ManavBhatiaX @svembu The big serious issue is also that rather than taking care of your parents, you're being forced to take care of parents of racists and retards by your taxes
English

@AgentPaneer @ManavBhatiaX @svembu its true that picture is lot bigger than discussed here with its pros and cons. so i limited my post to 'talent' discussion categorically mentioned by Mr Vembu .
more serious issue is abandoning parents and leaving their responsibility to care takers, relatives and friends
English

@SirTughlaq @ManavBhatiaX @svembu Remittance for what though
Petrodollar is taking a serious hit
What does usa produce?
You are also maximising value for the ppl who hate you from both camps as mentioned
And no, just because you left india doesn't automatically create a job in india
English

@AgentPaneer @ManavBhatiaX @svembu for everyone. when one leaves India, that leaves a job for another. the one leaves India maximizes his value, another one gets a job here, India get remittances.
English

@GoddessPythius @adi_9111 @Som_DH1 @svembu Built? I haven't seen a single american in india building anything apart from missionary conversion rackets.
English

@adi_9111 @Som_DH1 @svembu It is incredible how Indians believe they have a civilization and the US doesn't. As if the US isn't an outgrowth from Western European civilization, which conquered the planet and built the entire modern world we live in. Whose superiority is why Indians are desperate to invade.
