There are more bookstores, restaurants, wine bars, and plant shops than ever before in the US, and our libraries on average have longer opening hours. We don't have a shortage of consumption-oriented third places.
What we are missing is third places that demand something of you: churches, social clubs, union halls, etc. Places you have to show up to regularly, where you're expected to contribute, where you build the bonds that create real community. All the things that Putnam describes as social-capital-creating in Bowling Alone.
But no one wants to talk about those.

a humble public request to everyone who has recently become rich from IPOs /acquisitions / etc, and everyone who is about to become rich soon: please consider becoming the patron saint of more beautiful third places bookstore-cafe-florist-wine-bar-stationery-plant-shop-reading-room situations are usually economically deranged, which is precisely why they need benevolent capital intervention you will gain enormous aura points, become locally beloved, and more importantly, help create spaces that make a city feel alive, humane, and worth living in (please see: george lucas’s recent museum aura gains. this could be you)
