Introducing my substack, Behind the Wire, with my take on Reform UK vs Nottingham Post (and democracy). Behind the Wire is about fighting for journalism, and journalists, in the face of the many dire threats and pressures the industry is under today. open.substack.com/pub/frombehind…

Idea: a bar called The Situation Room. Like a sports bar but for politics. Cable news and live feeds on the screens instead of football. Atlases and copies of Jane’s Defence Weekly on every table. Multiple sets of Risk and Diplomacy behind the bar.

Work isn’t supposed to be this much fun. But for 20 years, it was. I covered Britain in all its glorious disorder, chasing stories from Downing Street to the Arctic Circle. Thanks Washington Post for the honor of a lifetime. We had some of the best foreign reporting in the world.

@PaulBrandITV Which just highlights Labour's abysmal record in bringing talented potential leaders to the top, leaving the membership time and time again with a least-terrible-option vote, and the party doomed to repeat present failures.

Talk has turned to who replaces Starmer (again). Labour MP tonight: “As far as I'm concerned, Starmer is done. What matters is what's next. If it's Angela, the honeymoon lasts a week. If it's Wes, a month. If it's Al, 6 months. Hard to see how it turns around beyond that.”

@TimesRadio @johnmcdonnellMP @Jo_Coburn John McDonnell, who was central to a leadership team which abused, leaked against and sought to get MPs deselected for the lightest criticism of Corbyn, is now absolutely appalled because Burnham isn't being given a clear path back to Westminster to.. plot against the leadership?

“They could overturn it.” “I think you’re clutching at straws there.” “There’s been u-turn after u-turn.” @johnmcdonnellMP says Keir Starmer might as well u-turn on banning Andy Burnham from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election. @Jo_Coburn

@hoffman_noa The Burnham faction don't even believe that - it's just a line they send gullible MPs out with. Burnham waited until other people got Labour back into government, and is now demanding a path be cleared for him to become Prime Minister. World class arrogance, ego and entitlement.

Are people seriously buying the line that Burnham's motivation to abandon Manchester when things are tough for his party and go back to the Commons is entirely selfless and all about what is doing best for the people. I mean, please.

@hwilliamssomers @shashj It’s been covered extensively. The ‘Why isn’t the media covering X?’ line invariably ignores the reality that can be checked by simply.. reading the news.

Incredible work from the @Telegraph’s investigations team, getting THE story that journalists have been trying to tell for years now. Walliams has always been publicly creepy but this is another level. telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/12/1…

@MrMatthewTodd The “root cause of all problems and division”? Not nationalism, religion, intolerance, ignorance, greed? There were no problems or divisions among humans before mass media ownership? Or when dictators have controlled all state media? Social media is not a cause of division?

It's so frustrating. People cant see we CANNOT SOLVE ANY OF THE PROBLEMS WE FACE WHILE BILLIONAIRES OWN THE MEDIA. They are the root cause of all problems and division. Just because the print readership is down doesn't mean they don't have vast influence. Their stories, websites, podcasts, columnists, still set the entire media agenda.
BBC Radio 4 Today@BBCr4today

"Are you scared of the press?" Madeleine McCann's father has told Today that politicians haven't pursued the second phase of the Leveson Inquiry into unlawful action by the media, because they're afraid. @EmmaBarnett asks the Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy if that's true.

Your Party has opted to have a ‘collective leadership’ - by committee - thus avoiding a leadership contest between @jeremycorbyn and @zarahsultana

@OliverKamm We were told that 'the establishment' and the media would bring down YP, and now we know how: by arranging for Sultana to hoard thousands of £s of members' money, a far-left revolt, a leadership row, and two MP resignations before the first conference. The deep state is powerful.

Partisans of Jeremy Corbyn are wont to claim he’s unfairly treated by the media. The truth is he gets a very easy ride. Chalk this one up to his long record of appalling political judgment, on which he is insufficiently interrogated.
