@caustic_agent Importantly, it also discourages the absolutely crucial element of research that is diversity in perspectives/understanding. There is no unique way to be a good scientist/mathematician. There are numerous different ways of thinking which can be invaluable to collective progress.

I don't find this narrative to be compelling at all. Hitting a wall in first year math (analysis?) is such a comically normal experience *especially* for a non math major who hasn't been trained in the jargon and norms, which take years to cultivate.

I posted about the experience of hitting my cognitive ceiling in grad school, and it’s interesting to see how many people are convinced that I just didn’t want it enough, or didn’t know how to study, or lacked domain knowledge (I don’t really want to sidetrack on my academic background, but I assure you that “not knowing how to study” was not my problem) The feelings of “not studying enough” vs “lacking domain knowledge” vs “being unable to process fast enough” vs “hitting a ceiling and being incapable of understanding” are very different feelings to me, but it seems like many people aren’t able to tell them apart. I’d love to find an example of a topic that is above most people’s cognitive ceilings, but without relying on domain knowledge that they lack. I think it would be a really illustrative example for many people. There must be something.

@sp_monte_carlo I was trying to find an example of this (or rather, a very short/elementary/compact) proof of a continuous function being nowhere differentiable. Haven't spent long looking but feel a 'simple' example proof would be useful for teaching!

@no_earthquake Academia is at least one part pyramid scheme. We can say it is also lots of other good things (scholarship, research, sharing of deep human knowledge etc) but modern Universities are also definitely about churning out degrees.

There ought to be a name for a place where a function properly crosses between being positive and negative. Not zero/root, that's just where its value is zero. Instead, a place where the value is positive on one side and negative on the other. A "transition point", maybe?
