Ever wanted an interactive lightning-fast solver for models in physics, chemistry, or biology? Do you have a web browser? I'm thrilled to announce VIsualPDE.com, built explicitly to solve PDE models interactively on most devices, written by @bj_w95 @Pecnut and I.

@caustic_agent Importantly, it also discourages the absolutely crucial element of research that is diversity in perspectives/understanding. There is no unique way to be a good scientist/mathematician. There are numerous different ways of thinking which can be invaluable to collective progress.

It's such a medieval cosmology -- it overfits to certain narrow aesthetic preferences about how the world should work, while being glaringly reductive, incurious, and wrong

@sp_monte_carlo I was trying to find an example of this (or rather, a very short/elementary/compact) proof of a continuous function being nowhere differentiable. Haven't spent long looking but feel a 'simple' example proof would be useful for teaching!

@TimHenke9 Yes agreed. But I think it is in the same direction of viewing statistical mechanics as deeply fundamental.

@TimHenke9 Prigogine and a few others have noted aspects of this (see the second quote in this section starting with "It is a remarkable fact...") He and others (e.g. Anderson's 'More is Different') also lamented a bit the sometimes narrow focus of HEP. #Time,_Structure_and_Fluctuations_(1977)" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Ilya_Prig…

I sincerely believe that whatever the True Nature of the Universe is, it will factor through this insight. My crackpot theory is that the True Universe is just statistical noise on a Euclidean space and we experience QM because "experience" requires time requires Wick rotation

@no_earthquake Academia is at least one part pyramid scheme. We can say it is also lots of other good things (scholarship, research, sharing of deep human knowledge etc) but modern Universities are also definitely about churning out degrees.

There ought to be a name for a place where a function properly crosses between being positive and negative. Not zero/root, that's just where its value is zero. Instead, a place where the value is positive on one side and negative on the other. A "transition point", maybe?

@DavidKButlerUoA In parts of dynamics, these are "transversal points" or "non-degenerate zeros." Often one talls about "transversality" to mean "the thing actually crosses and doesn't just touch."

Oh word there's actually an explanation for why he blocked me. Ok fair it's an annoying paper but I will say if you read it the clear villains are PoC intelligentsia, which I explicitly name myself within. I kinda thought that as a society we agreed self directed racism is fine?
