I understand that, but you can argue that because you're doing a movie that's for the fans of the games, it doesn't hurt to actually...be creatively faithful to it.
Again, the Sonic Movies are a perfect example of that.

Just as I suspected based on comments the director made. This is just any other horror movie / zombie flick with the Resident Evil IP slapped on front.
I don't think we'll ever get a truly great film adaptation of Resident Evil the way the fans know and love it.
