Nationalist activist Joel Davis, who has been in jail for almost two months after being denied bail for a Telegram post, has been hit with a series of "hate speech" charges over a podcast episode from December 2024. Police allege Davis religiously or racially vilified "Jewish people", "Indian people" and "African people" in the specific statements in the clip below. For context: - The comments made about Jewish people were made during a discussion about the Jewish lobby pressuring the Victorian government to strengthen anti-vilification laws, the same laws he has now been charged over. - The comments made about Indian people related to One Nation running Indian candidate Parminder Singh, who said he supported mass immigration from India because migrants like him work "100 hours a week". - The comments about African people were made in reference to police releasing images of a man of African appearance after a woman was allegedly sexually assaulted in the street. Davis has also been charged over an election stunt where he handed out satirical flyers mocking the Liberal Party for its positions on Israel, free speech, and anti-Semitism. He was charged in late December but full details were not available until now because of his restricted access to phone calls and legal representation due to being classified as a "national security threat".
