People really strongly hated Tavernier's defending but to me I thought he was one of our better defenders in recent years. I truly can't think of the defensive errors people despise him for over the space of the last 10 years except 1-2 max

@TheQuietKid18 Every winning team has defenders that can defend. This is where we have been going wrong for so long. The stats that will go with Tav will be made up by whoever is takes all the free kicks, corners and pens. People will finally realise we CAN live without Tav.

It’s right for RFC & Tavernier that he moves on. He’s been a lightning rod for some of the worst people drawing breath (both within & without the Rangers support) but it’s hard overall to argue that his strengths were outweighed by his weaknesses. Let’s go out with a 🏆

Romano saying Tavernier is 100% leaving now. Can't believe this is the last 5 games of his Rangers career. Hope it's the best 5 games possible. Proper marmite within the support but he was never the issue as the goals contributions will always override his own mistakes.

@lee_samo @theGlimmerTwin @TheQuietKid18 How about this then you fucking mongo. Targeting Tav as the weakest link in the Scottish cup final 2016. 10 years ago!! There have been plenty who have said it.

Take away whatever personal thoughts I have on him as a player so not to be accused of being biased. But the fact the Rangers captain is a joke figure amongst your biggest rivals, he’s the player for 8 years every single opposition targeted because they knew he was your weakest link is embarrassing. For your captain, and so called standard bearer to be the laughing stock and weak link of any team should never be right. Imagine Terry, Kompany, Bruno etc being their teams weak link?? Would never happen. James Tavernier was my favourite player under Warburton. But the second he was made captain changed everything for me. Maybe not his fault, but the lowering of the standards of what it means to be Rangers captain is on him and more importantly fans like this who have sucked up his arse for far too long. An exceptional run of form to get us to the Europa League final is 100% true. A monster especially in the last 3 home games. He should be thanked for his efforts and moved on. Maybe in time more people will appreciate him, but there’s got to be a reason at least half the support dislike him. 👍🏼
Skovmaan@brz_1872

People hate James Tavernier because he wasn’t a true winning captain. He was a war-time captain. A player that stayed loyal when we were in the trenches, and had us on the cusp of European glory. I think it’s important we speak about him with respect.

@theGlimmerTwin @TheQuietKid18 Stopped reading at the perfectly decent defender nonsense All sorts of players talking about games with Rangers have publicly said he was targeted as the weakest link in the team dating back to 2016. He’s fucking terrible defensively. Do you watch games with your eyes closed?

Here’s the thing though, almost everything you hit upon has only amplified in the past couple of years as Tav has gotten older. He was never consistently talked about as our “worst player” against Celtic until he was up against Maeda on a regular basis because he had him beat for pace. Even then, Maeda wasn’t even that successful against him until the last couple of years when Tav’s legs went and Maeda improved. The opposite was true, Tav was the one player whom the honest Celtic fan worried about because he more than anyone actually created and scored goals against them. This idea he can’t defend has also grown arms and legs in the last couple of years as he’s declined. Yes, it’s always been a fact he’s been a much greater attacking force than a defensive one. But for the majority of his career his pace and power meant he was a perfectly decent defender. He has been at times statistically the best defender in Europe. He led a defence that set a record for least goals conceded in the league ever. He has consistently been the best RB in the league based on his defensive stats alone, at one point being described as ‘perhaps the most dominant player in his position, in his league, anywhere in the world’. To be clear, even citing all that I’m not making the case that he’s a defensive great, that’s never been his game. But this idea he “can’t defend” simply doesn’t stand up to scrutiny over the majority of his career. Kompany was constantly mocked for being a weak link at City because of his injury issues. There’s a Reddit thread on r/ManchesterUtd from about 4 months ago asking if Fernandes is Man Utd’s worst ever captain for all the same reasons people ask the question of Tav. To captain a club with a winning history during a period where they aren’t winning will always have that effect. This idea Tav has lowered standards is just a non-starter. If truly removing all personal opinion and bias and simply looking at his individual achievements, they rank up there alongside almost any Rangers great. Almost 300 Goal Contributions in 11 years from any player is amazing. That’s an average of 27 per season. An average of 51 games played per season over the course is also outstanding, especially against the backdrop of injury problems we’ve had in recent years with key players. Tav is going to end his career as one of our all time appearance holders. Domestically, in Europe and overall. Obviously there’s the run to Seville where he was Top Scorer in the Tournament, but not just that, he’s led a period of sustained European success for the club. Multiple other records he’s notched from previous great players, precisely because he’s been one of the few players who has maintained a Rangers standard despite what’s been around him. The sad part is that these last two years especially have seen people fall into this trap of cascading his more recent issues across his career. Emphasising defensive frailties, focusing on the lack of team success. Through it all Tav has never hidden though. He is always there ready to put on the shirt. He hasn’t kicked off when dropped or spat his dummy. He’s just kept working. If he’s been here too long that’s on the club for not replacing him when they should have. Even this season he’s still scoring goals, still hitting his creative numbers… and still was statistically the best RB in the league for at least a period. Even at his worst he finds ways to contribute and he has helped save a number of key points in games this season. His time at the club is winding down, and it will always be an * on his career that he didn’t win more trophies at a club that defines itself by trophies won. But in time people will look back on his career with gratitude and amazing memories. Because if one thing is undeniably true, almost every moment of major success we’ve had in the past decade, he’s invariably played a major part it in.

@jamesblack1986 You do know existing member clubs get leeway yeah? You do know they get extra time applied so the don’t just get thrown out yeah? Then it leads to stuff like points deductions and so forth. All this mental gymnastics when the club in question have made an arse of it.

@CDSmid Existing member clubs also require a bronze level each season to participate in the SPFL. Four clubs currently don't meet rule D4.8 and don't currently hold a Bronze licence as of March 31st.

So Linlithgow can’t play in the playoffs because it’s unfair that Edinburgh City may lose their place in the league to a club without the relevant licence to play in League Two. Edinburgh City have the exact same level of licence as Linlithgow (entry level).

@jamesblack1986 The regulations have been updated the last few years. So you could get through with entry level but with bronze in first team and ground. Now you can’t. They clubs know this. The club is entirely at fault

@CDSmid They aren’t individual licences though. Those are all individual parts of the overall licence award. Edinburgh City hold an entry level licence.

@RFC_Michael_ It’s not really, all the clubs know what they need to do to get their licence. They only have themselves to blame.
