@mocha33319 @HeatherBo63 That is exactly why we are helping our own kids now by putting our name on their mortgages so that they can afford to buy their own houses, there might not be a lot left when they inherit but they will have a place of their own to live.

@HeatherBo63 My parents never left me anything, but I don’t mind - I made my own way. That doesn’t mean my kids need to struggle like I did. Hunting for spare change under car mats to afford a few quid for food and fuel. I will make sure my boys have a deposit for a home.

It's been quite an eye opener to read a lot of posts from very adult children complaining that they're unlikely to get anything from their parents after they die, because they'll probably need to sell their homes to pay for a care home. Utterly beggars belief how selfish and calculating they can be. It makes me feel quite happy to be on my own frankly. When my lovely grandma became too old to live in her house, she moved into a housing association care home. The rent was very cheap and she lived there, very happily, until she died at nearly 100 years old. Her three children, one being my mum, loved her dearly and I'm sure it was their love and laughter that kept her going for as long as she did. None of them were left anything because she had nothing other than her pension and they made sure that she always spent that on doing nice things for herself. Oh, I tell a lie... there was a few thousands pounds that she left to a dogs and cats home. No one felt hard done by like the selfish buggers on here seem to. I cannot stand this attitude. It's as if they only spend time with their parents because they want to make sure they're left some money. I hate hypocrisy and greed.

Politicians and activists think Earth is a machine they can control with dials and switches, when in truth we barely understand the system we're tampering with.

@Electroversenet So far the research is lab based and computer modeling with a few very small scale outdoor experiments. Just because it is being researched does not mean that it will ever be implemented.

When I started paying National Insurance contributions in 1976, the deal was that I'd get a pension providing for a basic standard of living in a then-unimaginable 50 years' time. But now I've finally got there, it's just half the minimum wage.

Could any retirees complaining about how hard it was to buy a house fifty years ago (it wasn’t) tell us how much stamp duty they paid?

@justaphag6 Good idea, there are plenty of young families who can afford a mortgage on a million pound house.

The fact pensioners would rather plunge newborn kids and young children into poverty, instead of selling their million pound houses or stop receiving the state pension when rich, IS BONKERS.

@SandyofSuffolk For some of them it may be a long way off but they will eventually be recipients of state pensions themselves. I hope they will look back on their comments and realize that they were wrong.

In all my 46 years of working, I never once heard anyone complain about old people getting a state pension. We just knew the older generation deserved looking after when they couldn't look after themselves after all their years of hard work.

@MarkKeenan5 @David__Osland Oh yeah, working all the overtime I could get for a small company on very low wages, bringing up a family, buying my house . Not much left at the end of the month for savings.

@David__Osland It was also expected that you would also save for your own retirement , so the state pension is a backstop !
