Since Sunday I’ve seen nothing but respect from Mexico fans - in the stadium, online, everywhere I’ve looked. Knocked out at home, at the Azteca, and the response has been pure dignity. What a football nation. All the pre-match talk was about the altitude advantage. But that atmosphere is exactly why World Cups should go to real football countries more often - and it won’t be matched now they’re out. Honestly: if England had lost that game, I’d have spent this week moaning about the officials and suspected home bias. Because we held on, I got to see exactly who Mexico are in defeat instead. And it turns out we share a rival. If it all goes to plan on Saturday, we’ll try to beat them for you in the semis. Gracias

How good was Djed Spence off the bench again? You don’t keep handing a player those minutes if you’ve got a problem with him. He was hard on Spence because he saw more in him.

Not a great game. Probably our least impressive attacking display of the tournament. But that's what's most pleasing, we're at the stage in the tournament where that doesn't matter - finding a way to win does, and I always backed us to do it, didn't you?

@robstaton Genuinely amazing, Rob. There have been some great side stories this World Cup and England seem to be at the centre of so many, but the unlikely friendship born at full time in the Mexico game isn’t something anyone saw coming, and it’s genuinely my favourite so far.
