Iroh is the only firebender known to have learned lightning redirection. A technique he invented himself by studying waterbending. He also learned to generate lightning. Ozai can generate lightning but never demonstrated the ability to redirect it, which is arguably the more difficult and nuanced skill. Iroh sought out the ancient masters (the dragons Ran and Shaw) and rediscovered the true origin of fire bending. He learnt that it comes from life and breath, not rage. This gave his bending a deeper, more sustainable foundation than Ozai’s anger-fueled style. Iroh’s conquest of Ba Sing Se, breaching the “impenetrable” walls of the greatest fortress in the world is considered one of the most remarkable military and bending feats in history. Ozai won battles largely through superior resources and subordinates. Even Fire Nation enemies and neutral parties spoke of Iroh with awe and fear. His reputation as the “Dragon of the West” was earned, not inherited. Ozai’s reputation was tied to his title as Fire Lord. Iroh chose a path of peace and never fought at full strength in the show. When he did (like his one-man prison break) he casually overwhelmed trained soldiers with ease, suggesting enormous untapped power. Ozai was a gifted, powerful bender but Iroh was a genius who expanded what firebending could even be.
