@DuncanCV

There are many content filters, but this one is mine. Third person gendered pronouns are a myth.

Endless rounds of misunderstanding are induced by the fact that when normal people talk about "homelessness" they mean something like "erratic or alarming behavior in public spaces" which is: a) Genuinely bad b) Not clearly related to housing status slowboring.com/p/the-two-home…

@morallawwithin Ironically, "AI is just advanced autocomplete" has been a common and unimaginative response for about five years now.

@Romy_Holland I'm not an expert of any sort, but letting your baby have some self-directed time in which they are calm and happy sounds like the only correct action. Upon reflection, it still sounds like the correct action. Waiting until they cry for you is good pre-language training as well.

the thing I feel most guilty about as a mom is that half the time when my baby wakes up from a nap he's pretty content to roll around in his crib babbling to himself and I just leave him there for 10-20 min or until he cries.

@StefanFSchubert It's a spurious and self-referential standard. When an AI cannot fold a shirt but can fold a protein, it won't matter how very much humans love shirts.

Hot take: print books do not count as experiencing information. Human brains did not evolve to take in narratives or data in this fashion.

Well, I am not sure what my analysis here is worth, but here is my 7,500 word primal scream of a military historian's take on the War in Iran. My best summary: this war is dumb as hell. acoup.blog/2026/03/25/mis…

The current scurry around reading comprehension, and this post, are the same thing. Words are translatable based on your wordability, and some people have low wordability, so translating between languages is just too much word.

Maybe I'm just ignorant, but despite looking, I've still never found a true example of a word/idea that cannot be translated into English. The English version may take multiple words, or even a sentence. It may lose its poetry. But it can be translated all the same.

@BiolAndLangLife @StatisticUrban saudades has multiple meanings, but the core meaning is 'nostalgia'. It has a reputation is being 'ulta-nostalgia' simply because most bilingual people writing on the internet have a literary bent and are bad at linguistics. Hear it in the street, there's no confusion.

@NielsHoven Looking at the report, I don't see what the criteria are. If you underlined "banana and honey" but not "granola bars", is that a fail? Does 'underline the sentence' mean if you don't underline from 'A' to 'bars' you fail? Many such questions.

From the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) Approximately 1 in 6 American adults can't complete this task: Underline the sentence that tells what Ms. Chanin ate during the swim.

The insanity of having a mix of UXs that hide and unhide scrollbars on bespoke triggers. Either this needs to converge on a unified standard (e.g., the longstanding 'never hide' criteria), or commit to killing the scrollbar as we have killed so many other useful features.

@lion_tender @moultano Lexiles are a famously weak measure; the 99th percentile passage isn't actually a much harder reasoning task (going by ChatGPT), it just has harder vocabulary, and a longer passage.

@moultano I asked an LLM this and got some interesting results. My prompt below. Claude's proposed p30 task (grade 6 functional level) is honestly a little tricky - it's something I or the kids usually use spreadsheets to manage when I'm sick for a couple days in a row.

I wish this was contextualized with something like "At each 10%ile of reading ability, here's a test question we'd expect half of respondents to get wrong." Apparently average reading ability is 7th-8th grade, but more than half of of adults have attended college?

TIL that the person who coined AGI as an acronym is out here posting that we, in fact, have it as it was originally envisioned (with receipts pointing to a fairly falsifiable definition for the term)
Mark Gubrud 🇺🇸@mgubrud

@MaMoMVPY Well, Lars, I INVENTED THE TERM and I say we have achieved AGI. Current models perform at roughly high-human level in command of language and general knowledge, but work thousands of times faster than us. Still some major deficiencies remain but they're falling fast.
