Had everything gone according to plan, today we’d have had less or no power cuts & stable prices that wouldn’t jump every time oil prices go crazy. Sri Lanka was positioning itself as a green energy hub, not just consuming but exporting. Imagine how much revenue it could bring.

@kulanthisilva @RW_SRILANKA @kanchana_wij Adani wanted USD 0.0826 per kWh, which is around LKR 26 at today's exchange rate. Thanks to NPPs so called coalgate, we meet significant portion of our energy demand burning diesel every day, the most expensive option of all.

Opposition MP D. V. Chanaka has alleged that power cuts took place at 45 locations yesterday due to low-quality coal, contradicting the government’s claim that no electricity cuts occurred. Speaking on the matter, Chanaka said he had warned in Parliament nearly two weeks ago that Sri Lanka would face power cuts within weeks due to substandard coal affecting electricity generation. He claimed that 45 feeders were switched off simultaneously without proper approval, resulting in power interruptions across several areas. Chanaka further alleged that the government later described the situation as “power breakdowns” rather than power cuts, but said the Ceylon Electricity Board system control centre report categorized the incident as “manual load shedding” due to insufficient power generation. He explained that “manual load shedding” effectively meant switching off electricity supply to selected areas, which he said amounted to power cuts. Chanaka also alleged that around 150 megawatts of expected power generation was lost due to poor-quality coal, forcing authorities to manually disconnect feeders. He further claimed that power cuts were carried out without approval from the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka, which he said was mandatory before implementing load shedding.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake acknowledged a quality issue in recently imported coal but assured that the cost will not be passed on to the public, stating that the supplier company has been fined. He also remarked that he does not “eat coal” to check quality, noting that such assessments are carried out through laboratory testing.

“Lal Kantha’s house should one day be declared a national heritage site. Fathers who can’t even buy a flute for their children got caught for your politics. That’s why the piano in this house has become a problem,” former SLPP MP Sanjeewa Edirimanne said, speaking in front of a photo of Minister Lal Kantha’s house during a press briefing.

Former Minister Navin Dissanayake has criticized the book launch by former Minister Udaya Gammanpila on the Easter Sunday attacks, claiming the event was an attempt to “whitewash the Rajapaksas.” In a statement on social media, Dissanayake said the event was held to unveil the “mastermind” behind the Easter attacks, but noted that the individual identified was Zahran Hashim, who had already been named in the Presidential Commission report. “There was a function to unveil the mastermind of the Easter attacks. Surprise, surprise — the mastermind was mentioned as Zahran Hashim, who was, anyway, mentioned in the Presidential Commission report,” Dissanayake said. He further remarked that the event being held yesterday was ironic, describing it as something that “should have been held on April Fool’s Day.” Dissanayake also expressed regret that several opposition figures attended the event, including Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Sagala Ratnayaka, Wajira Abeywardena, and Thalatha Athukorala. The book launch by former Minister Udaya Gammanpila focused on findings related to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks and was attended by several political figures. (
