Aquatic hyphomycetes are a fascinating group of aquatic fungi. Most of them feed on dead leaves in flowing water. Their spores are usually either sinuous or four-armed to enable them to catch on to new food sources. @BritMycolSoc

Two different diseases on Ranunculus repens. Leptotrochila ranunculi on the left with yellowing around brown rotting areas and apothecia not restricted to brown areas. Ramularia simplex on the right with veins delimiting black infected areas where sporulation occurs.

@FayrnHawk @BritMycolSoc @NorfolkNats Many thanks, Fay. That would surely be the best way to confirm it. Sadly it was a holiday find, and I’m no longer near the specimen! It’s a common species, though, so perhaps I’ll see it again in this contorted form, and I’ll be able to collect a bit of material to examine.

Spotted recently at Spout Hill near Holt, TG03/VC27 East Norfolk: two species of wood-rotting fungi. Top: perithecia of coral spot (Nectria cinnabarina) emerging from cut twig in brush pile. Bottom: apothecia of purple jellydisc (Ascocoryne sarcoides) emerging from tree-stump.

@specanatura @BritMycolSoc @NorfolkNats When I've seen the apothecia for this species they have not been as contorted as shown here. In situations like this, where I start to doubt my own understanding, I'd reach for a microscope and check whether I had an asexual form or apothecia. Are asci present?

@FayrnHawk @BritMycolSoc @NorfolkNats ...photos correctly. He calls left photo asexual form, right photo sexual form. It appeared to me that my photos were more like Paul's right photo (apart from a few scattered conidiomata in one of them). Might you be ble to help me better understand Paul's photos and mine?

My plant of the week @RHSHarlowCarr. Fuschia 'Whiteknight Amethyst' with less contrast between its pink sepals and purple corolla than on the more usual Fuschia magellanica.
