The origin thread is up - x.com/FreeBudgetMike… I’ve never told that story out loud before. If you read it, thank you. Short version: woke up at 2am unable to stop thinking about why budgeting tools cost money. A year and a half later, here we are.

@FreeBudgetMike Paying off debt feels emotionally right. Investing often looks mathematically right. The hard part is balancing both.

I paid off my mortgage in 4.5 years and it might have been my biggest financial mistake. I had a 3-4% interest rate. The market averaged 12%+ during those same years. I was aggressively paying off cheap debt instead of investing at a higher return. I do not regret the discipline. I do regret the math. If I did it again I would have invested the difference and let the numbers work for me instead of against me.

There are very few guarantees in personal finance when it comes to getting rich. Automatic dollar-cost averaging into total market index funds for 20 years is about as close as it gets.

@GuyTalksFinance I’ve always had this strategy but with a total stock market fund. Now I’m wondering if it’s time to reconsider given the concentration at the top of the S&P.

A majority of my money is invested in index funds. Mainly in growth funds and the S&P500. I have a small portion of my portfolio invested in single stocks just to have some fun with. A balanced approach is best when it comes to long term investing.

@emonuxui True the thing that hurt for me is that we had to take out a home equity loan for another investment opportunity at a 6.99% interest rate. I paid off our 3.875% mortgage just to get a 6.99% one 🤦‍♂️. Not one of my finer moments 😂
