In the 1991 Gulf War, six A-10s were shot down, primarily by infra-red surface-to-air missiles (IR SAMs) like the SA-9 and SA-13. Another 20 sustained significant battle damage. 2 A-10 pilots were killed, with others becoming POWs and eventually being released.

Unfortunately, this reflects the fact that the A-10 was designed in an era when ground-based air defence systems were a lot less powerful and accurate than they are now – and even then they were projected to be rapidly depleted in a war with the Soviets.

The Iranians have been preparing for this for a long time - they built their first underground missile base in 1984. At least 27 have been publicly identified, and there are almost certainly far more.
