🇺🇸 It’s hard to believe, but aerial refueling has been happening for over 100 years, first taking place in 1923. How modern refuelling works is a boom operator lies on their stomach in the back of a tanker, looks out a small window, and manually guides a 30-foot metal pole into a jet traveling at 300mph. 30,000 feet up. But the KC-46 Pegasus is trying to change that. No window. Instead, a panoramic camera system displays a real-time 185-degree view on 3D screens. Operators wear special glasses for depth perception. The whole thing runs on software. Sounds great, until you realize it's developed by Boeing. Unsurprisingly, the camera system has been plagued with problems since day one. Image distortion. Depth perception failures. Boeing has absorbed over $7 billion in losses on the program. The upgraded vision system, originally promised in 2023, is now not expected until summer 2027. The KC-46 is already flying missions over Iran right now. With a camera system that, by the Pentagon's own assessment, is still not working as expected. Source: Sam Eckholm YT
