Most of these comparisons have been generated in a legendary thread in Redpolling: a Birder Polling Group on Facebook, and I will try to give credit for ideas and photos whenever possible! DM new ideas and I’ll try to post them too!

Hummingbirds (New World) and sunbirds (Old World) fill similar ecological niches with their small size and nectar-based diets, although completely unrelated and found on opposite sides of the globe. These two look especially alike! Purple-throated Carib & Copper-throated Sunbird

@IdenticalBirds To be honest I think this female sunbird actually looks like juvenile (thus, pale) Bananaquits. Which is ALSO a nectarivorous species!

@IdenticalBirds Nectar feeding birds are one of my favourite examples of convergent evolution. Separately hummingbirds, sunbirds, honeycreepers, Hawaian Honeycreepers and Honeyeaters all separately were like "the optimal requirements for eating nectar are a long probing beak & FABULOUS colours"

The female Copper-throated Sunbird also makes a nice equivalent to a female Red-legged Honeycreeper! Honeycreepers are small, colorful tropical tanagers that ALSO eat nectar! 📷 Saravanan Krishnamurthy 📷 Jan Cubilla
