we experienced different tiers of media and symbiotic link that worked differently the disconnect from our virtual counterparts IS causing communication issues between us

@Keeeeeeja yeah, I was born in the 90s. My first instinct whenever I see something from the 80s or older was to ask my parents or anyone like "did everybody really dress like that?" or "did people really wear those hairdos?" bc I knew they weren't documenting every random moment of life

@Keeeeeeja @brownandbella This ties into their weird rejection of ideologies that used to come from subcultures and just taking the aesthetic of the subculture with none of the heart

@Keeeeeeja I think because virtual experience is (kinda) our lived reality. so many of our experiences are virtual (making friends, graduating, trends etc) that it’s easy for us to blur the two. not saying its right but experiencing smth virtually doesn’t make it any less real TO US

now we’re in a cybernetic moment the self you project online reaches everywhere / inward / outward / hard to separate from what you touch in real life and definition of real well that’s another discussion

@Keeeeeeja media from past generations isn’t even as readily available as it was for millennials & early gen z. i remember (early gen z) watching 80s/90s music videos and past era documentaries for hours on mtv growing up. i don’t think younger gen z even does that bc it’s not on socials!

@agentofchaos427 and that’s the point, we’ve started to blur and flatten the experience of CULTURE everything turns into this cosmic slop no one cohort is to blame or bend at the fucking knee everyone relax but but wrap it up i’m not going down the wall-e vibe

@Keeeeeeja Definitely not just a gen z thing. Seeing it across all generations like travel content for example. The human brain files it as having already lived the experience with no real memory to process it.

@Keeeeeeja Its always crazy to remember how wide of a range of birth years all fall under "millennial" cause I was almost 10 years old and grew up with 90s grunge. Your point is well taken and completely stands though.

shaped by proximity, music and the drug scene in metro mixtures my aunties went to jungle raves, that energy filtered down and dug itself into us but i was too young to have the hedonistic 90(s) acid rave exp but old enough to try dmt

@Keeeeeeja lol word, I’m not gonna claim 2005/6 as my adolescent years. When all I was doing was watching Disney, Cartoon Network and briefly listening to music on the radio lol

Just like when millennials are like Gen z wouldn’t remember this and they get all yes we do we were alive like yeah but it’s like y2k I was five when it happened doesn’t mean I remember it the way the grown ups did
khadija 🪐@Keeeeeeja

one thing digital nativity has done is blur the line between lived experience and screen experience as a millennial, i would never feel like i understood 90s grunge from a few MTV videos gen z often treats virtual exposure as equivalent to having lived it
