Yesterday we hiked to the edge of the world ⛰️🌈 Our plan for Tuesday was to drive up through Koke'e State Park, and eventually make it to the top of Kalalau Lookout, which looks over the Kālepa Ridge and straight out to the ocean. Unfortunately, we got to the top and it was pretty much completely covered by clouds and fog, as it had just lightly rained. We walked around up top for a bit, and were about to drive back down the mountain, when I decided to run back to the lookout and see if it had cleared. Low and behold, it did, and so I told my dad and sister to come back. While up there, we met this dude named Matt. Matt is a regular visitor of Hawaii, and told us about this unsanctioned trail that would take us down from the lookout, and all the way out to the end of the ridge. He offered to take us out there, since he was going anyways. There were a group of college girls, as well as a solo-traveling Frenchman, who overheard us, and asked if they could tag along. With our group of 8, we set out on the trail. It started out pretty sketchy, as we had to hop the fence of the lookout, and then crawl through another fence down a muddy hill. The path was unlike any I've been on; you're literally walking up and down a mountain ridge, through brush and mud, fighting the ridiculous wind, with no sort of guardrail or fence saving you from the multi-thousand foot drop off the side. It was an absolutely gorgeous hike though, having a pretty much completely unobstructed view of the mountain ridge to our right, and the valley beneath. If you know anything about Hawaii, you know the weather is sporadic and unpredictable. It would be completely clear, and then 10 minutes later, it would start raining, and clouds would roll in, making it almost impossible to see any of the beautiful views. Regardless, we decided to trek on, and hope for the best. It took us probably an hour to make it all the way (granted we stopped a few times at lookout spots to take photos). When we got about 97% of the way there, it got sooo foggy, and we couldn't see the ocean or anything. We almost turned around, thinking it may not be worth it to risk our safety on this slippery mud and dirt for no view, but since we were that close, we finished the trail. Within 5 minutes of making it to the end, the clouds cleared up, and we were treated to the most gorgeous view I have seen in my entire life. It truly felt like we had made it to the edge of Earth, with the ocean as far as the eye could see in front of us, and a stunning view of Kālepa Ridge and the beautiful Kauai coastline to our right, with the sun setting on the valley and shining golden light across everything. As if it couldn't get any better, a massive, semi-circle rainbow appeared in the valley (unfortunately hard to see fully on camera), and remained there for the entire 30 minutes we were out on the ridge. It even eventually spawned a lighter double rainbow. It's really hard to describe just how breathtaking of a view it was, and while the photos and videos I took are beautiful, they absolutely do not do justice to Mother Earth's beautiful creation. I am incredibly thankful that I was able to see something like this with my own eyes, as it truly felt like a dream. I'm so grateful for Matt for taking us out there, and for the rest of the group who tagged along that made it such a cool adventure. It was truly an experience and view I will remember for the rest of my life. Go out and explore the world; it has so much more to offer than you think. If you made it this far, I hope you enjoyed my short story and photos ♥️
