I empathize a lot with the first lady, and I don't find Jimmy Kimmel funny. He still has free speech rights, because the First Amendment does not just protect funny people with tasteful jokes. The government should not be pressuring a private company to fire someone.

All gerrymandering is bad, and what was even the whole point of all of this when we're just gonna have worse maps all around and the US House landscape barely changed from early 2025 in terms of a tipping point partisanship standpoint.

The thing about this whole Florida gerrymandering discourse is that if Rs are losing Trump +15 South Florida seats this year they are well on their way to a comfortable minority anyways. It's about the path to 218, not 200.

Democrats are mad about a potential 24-4 (85.7%) map in Florida, a Trump +13 state, all while they are claiming the following states are not gerrymandered: Virginia 10/1 (91%) for a Harris +5.8 state California 48/4 (92.3%) for a Harris +20.14 state - where the incumbent governor won by less than in Florida in 2022 New York 19/7 (73%), where they went for at least 20/6 (77%), in a Harris +12.6 state. - this state was just 15/11 in 2022. New York's first-in-the-nation Mid-decade gerrymandering efforts flipped 4 seats from Republican to Democrat, an astonishing gain of 8 seats, even as Trump pulled New York closer than it's been since 1988. Since Michael Freaking Dukakis. And again: New York drew first blood. Not us. They are just mad that we noticed what they were doing. (Illinois drew preliminary blood.)

On a proportionality basis, the Ronmander map in Florida is still significantly fairer than the Democrat gerrymander in Virginia. Dems won 42% of the vote in Florida and will win between 14 and 21% of the congressional seats under DeSantis' new map. Meanwhile, the GOP won 46% of the vote in Virginia and will win just 9% of the congressional seats under the Dem gerrymander. DeSantis' new map is also vastly more fair than California's. Trump won 38% of the vote in CA, and yet Republicans are likely to win just 7% of the state's congressional seats. If you look at the gap between the state's popular vote breakdown and the percentage of seats the minority party is expected to win under the map, Florida's new map is almost perfectly on par with Illinois or Maryland.
