Acts 1:4-5 and 8 show the Father sending the promise of the Holy Spirit and Jesus empowering the disciples through the Spirit, demonstrating distinct personhood and relationship. The Trinity is a mystery beyond full human comprehension but is foundational to Christian faith, revealing God's nature as relational love (1 John 4:8), and essential for understanding salvation: the Father sends the Son to redeem, and the Spirit applies that redemption to believers. This doctrine guards against both unitarianism (denying the persons) and tritheism (dividing God into three gods), affirming one God in three persons who are perfectly united in essence and purpose.

MUSLIM WOMEN MUST WEAR THE HIJAB — ISLAMIC COMMANDS OF CONTROL THAT CLASH WITH BIBLICAL FREEDOM AND DIGNITY The hijab is not a neutral fashion choice or simple expression of personal piety in Islam. It is a religious obligation rooted in specific Quranic commands that treat women’s bodies as sources of temptation requiring concealment and male oversight. This system stands in direct opposition to the biblical view of women as equal image-bearers whose modesty flows from the heart rather than external compulsion. THE QURANIC COMMANDS THAT MANDATE THE HIJAB Islamic sources derive the requirement for women to cover their hair and body primarily from two passages. Quran 24:30-31 instructs: “Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts… And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers…” The real meaning is clear and uncompromising. Women must hide their beauty (adornment) from unrelated men to prevent fitnah (temptation and disorder). The headcover must be drawn over the chest, and exposure is limited to a narrow list of male relatives, slaves, or prepubescent children. This is not advisory; it is presented as divine instruction for purity and social order. Quran 33:59 adds: “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused.” The covering serves to mark believing women as distinct and protected from harassment. In practice, this frames unveiled women as potentially available or provocative, placing the burden of male self-control entirely on female concealment. The term hijab itself means barrier or partition. It extends beyond a headscarf to a broader system of separation that restricts women’s public presence and visibility. MALE AUTHORITY AND ENFORCEMENT IN ISLAMIC LAW Quran 4:34 establishes the framework for control: “Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other… So righteous women are devoutly obedient… But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance—[first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them.” Classical Islamic jurisprudence interprets a wife’s refusal to wear the hijab or maintain proper modesty as nushuz (disobedience or rebellion). This grants the husband authority to admonish, withhold intimacy or support, and apply light physical discipline as a final step. In Sharia-based societies, state enforcement through morality police adds another layer of coercion. Refusal to comply can result in arrest, fines, or violence. This is not cultural overlay but doctrine. The husband functions as qawwam (maintainer and authority figure) with disciplinary rights over his wife’s dress and behavior. Women who resist face both domestic and societal pressure to submit. BIBLICAL CONTRAST ON MODESTY AND WOMEN’S DIGNITY The Bible calls for modesty but locates it in the heart and character, not in mandated garments or male physical enforcement. First Timothy 2:9-10 instructs women to adorn themselves “with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly… but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.” First Peter 3:3-4 emphasizes that true adornment “must not be merely the external… but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.” Nowhere does Scripture command women to cover their hair or bodies as a religious barrier against male temptation, nor does it grant husbands authority to strike wives for disobedience in dress. Biblical marriage reflects mutual submission in the fear of the Lord, with husbands loving their wives as Christ loved the church. Women are addressed as full heirs of grace with equal spiritual standing before Jehovah, not as sources of fitnah requiring concealment and control. REAL-WORLD IMPLICATIONS OF THIS DOCTRINE Where Sharia governs public life, the hijab becomes compulsory and its enforcement reveals the underlying view of women. In Iran, women have faced brutal crackdowns, including beatings and imprisonment, for improper hijab during protests against mandatory covering. In Afghanistan under Taliban rule, strict veiling rules combine with bans on education and public movement, reducing women to near-total seclusion. In Saudi Arabia and other strict states, morality police historically patrolled compliance, while social and familial pressure operates even where laws have eased. In Western societies, the same doctrinal roots produce parallel pressures within communities: family expectations, social ostracism for removing the hijab, and resistance to integration that prioritizes Islamic norms over individual liberty. The system objectifies women by design, reducing their value in public to their ability to avoid arousing men rather than recognizing their inherent dignity as image-bearers. This is not empowerment or protection in the biblical sense. It flows from a theology that subordinates women’s agency to male authority and communal religious conformity. The contrast with Scripture could not be sharper: one system externalizes control through barriers and discipline; the other calls for transformed hearts expressed in voluntary godliness and mutual respect. Christians who value the equal worth of women before God and the freedom of the Gospel have every reason to recognize the hijab not as harmless tradition but as a visible marker of a comprehensive doctrine that limits women in ways the Bible never does.
