I’m not 100% up to date on Ukraine but i always expected Crimea to be used like that eventually to broker peace without giving up any of the east.

The West's Ukraine policy is disgusting to be honest. We encourage them to fight and die and tell them it's the most important thing in the world, while nobody else risks any of their young people to fight in the war. I don't buy the revisionist claims that 'NATO expansion caused this.' (NATO expansion was not imminent and pre-war Ukraine would've accepted neutrality as a condition of avoiding the war, if it also meant no territorial loss.) It's a classic imperialist war. The primary cause of the war was Russia's unwillingness to let its sphere of influence/civilizational sphere shrink. But our position is deeply incoherent. For example, we discouraged Ukraine from making a deal when it was at its strongest position, in April 2022, after the "Special Military Operation" failed to take Kiev. This is one of the few things the "Ukraine revisionists" are in my assessment correct about; peace was possible at this time, and the US/West pressured Ukraine not to consider it. If Western countries are going to support Ukraine at this point - where it is slowly losing the war, and enduring thousands of military casualties a month - they should be deploying their own young people to fight and die alongside the Ukrainian men who are killed and maimed every week if not day. Yes there would be a nuclear risk, but I suspect it would be low, given that the Western militaries would clearly not be attempting to take or occupy Russian territory. (By the way, there was also the risk of nuclear war in the Korean War, at a time when Joseph Stalin was leading the USSR; yet the United Nations still deployed a huge military force to aid the South, under the US.) If the West doesn't think running this risk would be worth it, they should actively coerce Ukraine to stop the war even on non-ideal terms. Enough of this idiotic middle ground. It's gross that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or maimed, and at least 20,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed, yet all our young men who "support Ukraine" do is go there and take selfies.
