"Greg Hayes, chief executive of Raytheon, said the company had 'several thousand suppliers in China and decoupling . . . is impossible.' 'We can de-risk but not decouple,' Hayes told the Financial Times in an interview, adding that he believed this to be the case 'for everybody.' 'Think about the $500bn of trade that goes from China to the US every year. More than 95 percent of rare earth materials or metals come from, or are processed in, China. There is no alternative,' said Hayes. 'If we had to pull out of China, it would take us many many years to re-establish that capability either domestically or in other friendly countries.' ft.com/content/d0b949…

THE US MILITARY IS MADE IN CHINA That figure is from a serious Pentagon-commissioned report: "The report was issued by Arlington, VA-based Govini which was awarded a five-year $400 million contract from the Pentagon in 2019 to deliver data, analysis and insights into DoD spending, supply chain and acquisition" Below are links to the report itself[1,2] and the popular writeup of it[3,4]. A few key graphs follow. 1) First, here's a hi-res version of the graphic above. It shows that US air-launched armaments are highly dependent on Chinese suppliers: 2) That's because there are tens of thousands of Chinese suppliers in US supply chains. It's very hard to figure out what's actually dependent on China because it might also be your supplier's supplier. 3) The report also says Chinese supply chain dependencies are present in every major weapons platform, including US aircraft carriers: I don't think people have yet thought through the implications of trying to fight your factory, namely China. And this isn't something that can be solved overnight, or even in a decade. Because a "supply chain" at this scale is an entire economy, as it's a network of many firms that all buy and sell from each other. Anyway, read the reports and judge for yourself. Party Plenum. #China will deepen reforms. Now they won’t be about a Party retreat and opening up to free market forces, but about a spread of all-encompassing rules and regulations and mass study. It’s a neo legalistic program inspired by Mozi and Hanfeizi

That's why it was a mistake to invite VDL to the meeting with Macron... x.com/apocalypseos/s… Right out of it, she did a solo press conference to peddle the brand new "overcapacity" narrative introduced by Janet Yellen, saying they'll "coordinate with the G7" (i.e. the US) to sanction China if they "don't address it"... As a reminder "overcapacity" is a buzzword for "China is becoming too competitive" so asking them to "address it" is akin to a fellow sprinter asking Usain Bolt to run less fast... But more importantly it completely undermines Macron's "strategic autonomy" narrative. It's a terrible image: in Macron's own words this was the whole point of the trip, show that France and Europe can speak to China independently with their own voice. And then they literally use American words to say they'll ally with the Americans against China. You couldn't make it up 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
