Because she works in a system that asks her to manage the behaviour of the complex sea of humanity with no tools or systems to keep safety, dignity and order. Because the default mechanism she’s allowed to use to respond to disruption is a restorative chat and little else.

Think the kid was high-school age. The age when daughter's girl friends jokingly gave her most likely to become a serial killer. In public she's relatively quiwt, stoic & inscrutable. Do some teachers become their pupils, or does teaching select for less grown up?

@theenglishwitc1 @Miss_Snuffy 22yo daughter has a shiny maths degree, but one of her other talents us that she can write extremely well. Suppose she got to wring a few years of glory from that. Oh well. Perhaps she can learn to write less well to head off accusations of using AI.

AI detectors don’t work because they’re, uh, AI. And AI was trained with the best of texts which is why people often get accused of using AI when they just have good SPaG. It’s a mess at the moment, but students who use AI for essays will end up being exposed in exams or in their careers.

@drhingram Oh. We got caught by one taking 3-4 year-old daughter to closest neighbourhood park to try bike riding. They blurred & disappeared us at some point. Still visible from a virtual distance but we fade away if you get up that close.

Had to think about that because it requires good-enough AI almost 3 years ago, but yes it probably was. Won't just be humanities w. associated trouble, although will obviously be less for courses w. lots of traditional terminal exams in halls.

I recently spoke to a teacher of 35 years from a school in my former constituency Redditch. She said many children in classrooms who have been labelled neurodiverse are being given dummies to keep them quiet (aka "chew toys") I do find this incomprehensible. How and when did we as a society decide that children as old as 9 or 10 needed to chew dummies in order to be educated? My contact also said that in her view there was nothing medically wrong with these children but they were poorly parented and badly served by the whole system that is telling them there is a medical thing wrong with them. She said she can't freely express her views in the classroom for fear of being ostracised or losing her job. I've written about the SEND system on my substack.
