A question inspired by a conversation I had earlier. Can ecological dynamics exist without Gibson’s theory of direct perception? Or, is Gibson’s theory what makes it “ecological”? Anyone fancy taking that on?

@JonMackey14 I’m not saying people can’t get info without direct perception, they obviously can. I just wonder if it’s the same kind of info Gibson was on about, or if it ends up being more indirect and less tightly linked to action in the moment.

@OptimalFitLK No I don’t think you are to be honest, and none of this is “loaded” from my end but curious to know why you think that without direct perception humans cannot pick up info from the environment?

@JonMackey14 I could be seeing it wrong from my view but I mostly see it about patterns & coordination changes over time. Maybe looking at timing, rhythm, stability, variability. Take “Gibson” out, you’re not directly linking those changes to the info athletes pick up from the environment.

@PaulFisher17 Sadly,it’s not confined to early graduates. The industry (sports,elite,development etc) in general is littered with burnt out professionals,sacrificing their own health and relationships with little or no security & subpar remuneration

Just when you thought / hoped things were progressing in the industry - reality is experience is invaluable & will open many doors, but graduates / qualified personnel should be respected.

For optimal athlete development, play the long game. Involving kids in talent promotion programmes early leads to short-term performance success. But success at senior level was associated with LATER entry into talent promotion programmes. Data from ~6000 athletes 👇
