Last night on Beale Street there were at least two separate shootings. A mob of some 200 black teens caused mayhem in the $60 million Tom Lee Park before heading to Beale Street. Business owners on Beale tell me there were fights and stampedes all over downtown. At several had to shut down their establishments early because of the violence. The black preachers, black business leaders and black elected leaders need to have a "Come to Jesus" conversation with the citizens of Memphis. Enforce the curfew. Arrest parents who allow their children to break curfew. God only knows much worse last night could have been without the Memphis Safe Task Force. We don't need any more community centers or athletic fields or basketball courts. We need moms and dads to step up and starting parenting. We'll be happy to supply hickory switches and/or belts. And we need a district attorney's office that will fight crime instead of treating the criminals like victims. The time for dancing around this issue with politically correct jargon is over.
