I'm forever honored to be the bookends of Tom Brown's PhD students with Don Anderson. It was incredible to see 13 of 19 of his PhD students together. His approach to rigorous science, thinking creatively, and forming clinical collaborations have played a large role in my career.

@paulspacey @ImYouthSoccer Also missing the point that some players say I am a *insert league* player when it is clear they are not and would benefit from playing (more) in another league to develop. Perhaps then they are ready for *that league* Can you tell it is U14 tryout season?!

@ImYouthSoccer Strawman. You missed the point.

“I’m an *insert league* level player.” It means nothing. There is so much disparity between the top and bottom teams while there is also huge disparity between the top and bottom of most rosters. Your league name is irrelevant when you talk about your ability as a player.

@AngrySoccerGuy Not controversial at all. I was questioned why I wasn't yelling more because "that's what a coach is supposed to do". I educated my parents on this exact point; the kids need to learn to play for themselves. Parents are encourage to cheer but not instruct, too

Controversial opinion: Adults (coaches/parents) who scream instructions from the sideline, prohibit their own players from making their decisions based on their field of vision.

@paulspacey @AngrySoccerGuy Perhaps I believe it if that parent coaches a club-level sport as well. I've coached club soccer for years and find myself remarkably quiet when compared to other parents on my daughter's select softball team.

@AngrySoccerGuy It’s a subconscious psychological reveal that usually comes from a place of insecurity Almost always means lots more hassle to come further down the road.

Anyone else have @PLOSONE refuse to review your manuscript because you supposedly didn't have IRB approval to recruit human subjects despite you submitting evidence that you did? I'm in Bizarro World with them and can't figure out a path forward

@Don_K_Williams @fitsoccerqueen I set clear expectations for my parents for "do's" and "don'ts" from the sidelines. Cheer effort, but you're not the coach. Consequences could progress to being barred from the sideline. After initial push back, I had 0 issues all season. Girls played great & had huge growth

Agree with this about taking risks. During my job talk years ago, I was advised to have a black slide near the end. No text. My advisor said that the audience will all turn to you, so you better have something good to say. I tried it. They all looked. I got the job.

Field of Dreams is currently on TV. It was always hard to watch the ending without choking up. Now, with James Earl Jones passing away this week, Terence Mann walking into the corn just hits differently.

@rosshm16 I’m suggesting that people are frustrated with the whole publishing system and are not participating, so your review pool is shrinking. Change the system, and reviewers will return

@rosshm16 Or…what about publishing more? Personally, I’ve seen too many high quality papers not get published because of “space restrictions” of a journal. If acceptance isn’t based on quality, why review for that journal?

My kid meant to ask what a "visiting" scholar is, but instead, he asked about a "traveling" scholar..... and there needs to be such a thing.

@Don_K_Williams Last week at the tryout, I was trying to talk about our program, coaching style, team etc , the mom stopped me saying “ is your team playing at ECNL ? I said not this year. - She left ! 🤨

⚽️ Parents, please don’t let this be you! Actual parent in quotes: “My kid is only 11 but the clock is ticking!” “We are going on vacation & are looking for private training or camps while we are there” Translation: If she is going to pay me back for all this ⚽️ travel & 💰, I cannot have her taking any downtime to be a kid & enjoy life Can anyone help me keep her going 24/7/365 so I can get my ROI?
