Wat mij opvalt aan de recente tunnels die het IDF in Libanon heeft ontdekt, is hoe enorm geavanceerd en omvangrijk ze zijn. Hoge plafonds, uitgebreide infrastructuur, elektriciteit, opslagplaatsen en militaire apparatuur; dit zijn geen geïmproviseerde schuilplaatsen maar ondergrondse militaire complexen waar jarenlang aan is gebouwd. Los van de honderden miljoenen dollars die hierin zijn geïnvesteerd, betekent de vernietiging ervan veel meer dan alleen financiële schade voor Hezbollah. Elke tunnel die wordt blootgelegd en vernietigd, is een aanvalscorridor, wapenopslagplaats en commandostructuur die niet meer kan worden gebruikt om Israël aan te vallen. Het verklaart ook waarom Iran alles op alles zet om de ontmanteling van deze terreurinfrastructuur te voorkomen. Jarenlange investeringen, planning en militaire opbouw verdwijnen in 1 klap. Wat wordt vernietigd, kan niet langer worden ingezet voor infiltraties, verrassingsaanvallen of raketoperaties tegen Israël. De aandacht gaat vaak uit naar de raketten die worden onderschept, maar het uitschakelen van deze ondergrondse infrastructuur ontneemt Hezbollah ook een aanzienlijk deel van zijn offensieve capaciteit voor de komende jaren.
