high times: the mag that lit the lore 🌱 origins (1974): started as a one-off spoof by tom forçade, a radical smuggler, underground publisher & prankster. he called it “playboy for potheads” & bankrolled it w/ drug money. 🖨️ first issue: printed 10k @HIGH_TIMES_Mag copies of issue #1, sold out fast. glossy pics of mushrooms & buds, centerfold-style. tagline: “the magazine of high society.” 💸 funded by weed: tom forçade funneled cash from smuggling colombian & mexican brick into funding radical media like @HIGH_TIMES_Mag. no investors, just kilos. 🧠 founding crew: built by activists, freaks & writers like ed dwyer, @rexweiner, dana beal, yossarian, cindy ornsteen & @edrosenthal. they laid the 1st blueprint at forçade’s nyc loft. 📈 overnight cult hit: by 1978, @HIGH_TIMES_Mag was pushing 1m copies per issue. glossy, subversive & everywhere, head shops, newsstands, college dorms & baked into weed lore. 📚 not just weed: covered psychedelics, politics, grow tips, dealer profiles & the drug war’s failures. it was gonzo, outlaw & educational all at once. 🕊️ death of the founder: forçade died by suicide in 1978. he left behind a vision, a blueprint & a trust @HIGH_TIMES_Mag lived on, run by activists & lawyers he handpicked. 🏆 the cup era: in the ‘80s & ‘90s, new editor @stevenhager420 launched the cannabis cup in amsterdam. @HIGH_TIMES_Mag became a global cannabis brand, not just a zine. 🧬 dna stays intact: 50 years later, still pushing plant freedom, anti-censorship & connoisseur cannabis. the format evolved, but the fire stayed lit. 📡 from print to pop culture: @HIGH_TIMES_Mag went from newsstand to website to ig. still throws the cup. still covers the movement. still high. - @nuggnotes 🪴

The Rise of Underground Seshes: Legacy vs. Legalization 🌿💰 🚀 The $8.7B Underground Boom: While legal cannabis struggled under high taxes and corporate control, underground seshes took over—outselling dispensaries 3:1. 💨 Seshes Redefine Access: These pop-up cannabis markets became the go-to for affordable, top-tier weed—no dispensary markup, no pre-packaged flower, and direct-to-consumer exclusivity. At any sesh, buyers could cop fresh drops, sample dabs, and connect directly with legacy growers. 🔥 Secret Sesh (LA) – The Blueprint: Founded by @TimBrown_CA in 2012, @secretsesh_la started as a private cannabis meet-up at Headroom Gallery before growing into LA’s biggest underground event. Hosted by @gettinghighwith, it attracted 400+ attendees per sesh, blending live music, games, & ultra-exclusive strain drops. 🌮 Taco Sesh (SoCal) – Weekly Market Takeover: A rotating farmer’s market-meets-sesh, Taco Sesh redefined underground access, with free dab hits, 30–50% cheaper prices than dispensaries, and secret locations announced via IG. Soon became known as “plug meetups” 💎@astorclubnyc (NYC & LA) Elite Lounge: Most exclusive sesh in America, serving high-end cannabis to a VIP clientele. NYC’s Chinatown location specialized in rare genetics like Piff & Haze, while LA’s 3-story lounge featured a @Violabrands -sponsored rooftop basketball court. Celebs like @asvpxrocky & @Alchemist pulled up regularly. Top-shelf brands like @TenCo & @JeuGreen dropped limited-run strains. Referral-only. 🚔 Crackdowns & Law Enforcement: As underground cannabis seshes grew in popularity, law enforcement intensified its crackdowns. In 2018, Taco Sesh was shut down due to zoning violations, signaling the start of stricter enforcement. By 2023, the @LAPDHQ raided Secret Sesh, arresting organizers & seizing products. Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., authorities targeted flea market seshes exploiting the “gift loophole,” further tightening regulations on unlicensed cannabis events. 📊 Market Comparison (2023): - Licensed CA Market: $3.1B. Underground Market: $8.7B - Dispensary Prices: $60–$75 per eighth. Sesh Prices: $25–$40 per eighth By 2025, seshes stood as the last stronghold for legacy cannabis, proving that culture > corporate. 💨 - cannabis chronicles🪴

“If I end up in a some s–t-kicking bar somewhere in middle America and some guy finds out that I did ‘Ford Fairlane,’ it’s like free drinks for the whole night,” @therennyharlin said. “There is a huge fanbase for the movie, who know it by heart. They are really hardcore fans. "

@BorisDralyuk Wrote an article in the early 70s for Changes, the mag published by Mingus' wife Sue Graham. To get paid, you had to go to their apartment, and there he was - said hello in that voice - and in addition to twenty bucks for the article, that was my bonus. She was pretty cool, too.

Happy birthday to Charles Mingus, #BOTD in 1922 — an Angeleno original who never stopped thinking and who, in recounting his ill-fated elopement, drops the fact that he and high-school pal Buddy Collette were extras in ROAD TO ZANZIBAR (1941). Scenes cut, alas…
