@neolithicrumba2 Agreed, self interest has grown, but that’s why non-partisan, rights-based foreign aid is even more crucial. What kind of contingency plans do you think are needed?

I think fundamental human rights are an admirable goal, and after WWII there was a time when people who lived through the worst violations of those rights worked to establish some core values. But that generation is now gone and countries around the world have become both complacent and self centered. Even internally, politicians work for personal gain for themselves and their backers. It makes sense to fund programs that prevent communicable diseases. We know that microbes don’t respect borders, so even if governments reject the greater good, donor nations still benefit from money spent abroad. With the current situation though, it would be reckless not to have a contingency plan.

Foreign aid and international funding should remain non-partisan, as they are meant to protect fundamental human rights.
