Since 2010, the number of children acquiring HIV has dropped by 62% — the lowest since the 1980s. But 120,000 children still acquired HIV in 2024. And with funding cuts dismantling the prevention programmes that made this progress possible, we cannot afford to slow down now.

The global HIV response exposed this clearly. Life‑saving treatment existed in 1996—but patents kept prices far out of reach of those in need, at $10,000 per person per year. Millions were denied care. An estimated 12 million people, mostly in Africa, died. This was a failure of global rules, not science.
