ICYMI, @ILEPA must revamp its permitting process for polluting industries in residential neighborhoods. It's a HUGE victory, especially for our friends at @SE_TaskForce, @pcrchi, @CEJNetwork, & @LVEJO, who have long fought against environmental racism. grist.org/cities/chicago…

Grist writes: "The settlement between the @EPA and the @ILEPA includes that the agency enact expansive changes which center community input as well as the history of the company applying for the permit. This is significant, according to @GinaRamirez311." 🙌

This agreement needs to be celebrated and held accountable because the implementation matters! This was possible by the organizing of those before us and those that gave fuel to @SE_TaskForce @CHIhungerstrike @pcrchi and our siblings from @CEJNetwork. All power to the people!

This agreement stems from a civil rights complaint made by Chicago Southeast Side environmental justice groups in 2020, concerning the decision to move a notorious metal shredder from Lincoln Park to their mostly working-class community of color. grist.org/cities/chicago…

@IEPA's new policy, effective immediately, also requires evaluating applicant histories, addressing disproportionate impacts with stricter requirements, streamlining discrimination grievance processes, and improving public and language access.
