Why I decided to go short $ARES: $ARES is essentially a large asset management firm that invests other people's money (pension funds, endowments, insurance companies, wealthy individuals) into: -Private Credit / Direct Lending (~66% of AUM) -Real Estate (~20% of AUM) -Private Equity, Infrastructure, Secondaries Commercial real estate is absolutely screwed and is a ticking time bomb. Private credit (which consists of a lot of CRE) is also in trouble and has shown cracks in the past few months. I want to write a detailed article on this subject cause most people have no idea about CRE and why it is in so much trouble. Long story short, CRE is just math and the math aint mathin' There are many ways to express this view, I just chose $ARES because of the options liquidity and their exposure to CRE. They have a separate CRE mortgage REIT ( $ACRE) which has been severely distressed. $ARES has about 20% exposure to direct commercial real estate equity but their true CRE exposure is much higher, due to how much CRE is a part of their Private Credit/Distressed Lending. The chart is also looking bearish. Even though I think there could be a short-term bounce based on rate cut hopium (maybe), imo what will happen is inevitable.
