Really makes me wonder, why is Pokémon so much against the idea of having 6v6 single battles when the games' entire main campaigns revolve around building your team of 6 for single battles?

a mechanic being "optional" doesn't mean it can't warp the design of other elements(or that said elements weren't designed with the optional mechanic in mind)

@datnofact While we're at it, "optimising the fun out of a game" is a load of bullshit. Optimising and minmaxing is fun, the ppl who talk about how it's not fun just don't understand and refuse to engage

"you control the buttons you press" is a reasonable response to people getting mad at dialogue choices or character customisation options they don't have to use, but expecting players to avoid optimising the fun out of a game is more of a design issue than a player issue.
