Thought for the day. Most people’s tactical gear needs can be served with a chest rig and 3 day pack. 4-6 mags. Food water and medical supplies. Add in maybe a poncho and what ever else you may need in your neck of the woods and done. Then you go a you hike in it. You get use to the rifle. You get use to the weight. Not only is it good exercise but it will allow you to find any issues your gear may have

@Un_namefag Plenty of nerds who have never shot a rifle. Cosplayers whose only experience is because of video games. The look on someone’s face when they ring a steel plate at 200 yards. It’s priceless

@StrixLeshay That's a great point! I think we also have different reference points for "Newbie" for me that's a guy that plinked with a 22 and iron sights as a kid, it sounds like for you that's someone with no rifle fundamentals

Thought of the day. A basic style ar15 with a red dot and magnifier would serve most people just fine for their ar15 needs

@D_R_Ball I larped in the woods before I started doing a lot of range work. Both are important. You have to learn what you are capable of.

Here’s your New Year’s resolution. Get some kit, not too much, and go LARP in the woods. I know this may be controversial and may turn some people off but, you should be LARPing in the woods more than you should be hitting the range. Get out there, work on your fitness, have fun.

@arkb1987 In general? Most people just need to prep for a hurricane katrina style incident. The shtf/zombie apocalypse/ insert your idea of choice thing is a fantasy. The rifle stuff is a fun thing to do with friends and to better yourself

@StrixLeshay I unironically think the condor chest rig is about the best bang for buck if you're starting out, ran mine for a while.

@Un_namefag I see it as a confidence builder. I was on the fence about magnifiers myself until I used them in teaching newbies.

@StrixLeshay I suppose it might be a preference thing, but I'd definitely tell a friend to get a flashlight before a magnifier. And a small dot red dot will be better farther out than most people think, but slower than a larger one close up of course

@CatAsphyxiant I just grabbed a pic of a chest rig. It’s the armed citizens choice about what sort of chest rig they get. From the Gucci of an lbt to the Chicom surplus 20 dollar special. What matters is that it works for them

@Un_namefag Flashlights are super important. I put them on the same stage as slings. Once the new shooter gets use to his optic equipped rifle he can get the add ons

@ArmedJ0y The nice thing is we can grow into it. Just last week I was thinking about my first rifle and how much it taught me and how much I miss it.

@ArmedJ0y You are right on the sbr aspect but I’m also thinking of that newbie shooter. It’s time for his first rifle. He’s 18. Wanting to experience the joy for the first time.

Don't even need the magnifier, unless you're including hunting in it. An SBR (braced) AR15 with the the cheapest Vortex red dot will cover the overwhelming majority of actual defensive use cases for the majority of people. Would include a suppressor in that if the government wasn't so fucking annoying about it

@StrixLeshay And if you have an astigmatism swap the dot/magnifier for a 3x prism optic

@boredlawyer310 @Darbypathos I’ve seen people run when a gun is flashed. However my father had two things he loves saying when he teaches self defense. If you pull your pistol you need to be ready to use it and every bullet you fire has a lawyer attached to it

@StrixLeshay @Darbypathos There's even some nonsense on here about how people have "de-escalated" by flashing their gun. No. If your gun needs to make an appearance, it better be the right time to use it. Treat it like your dick.

@boredlawyer310 @Darbypathos Well that makes sense then. My opinion about self defense is people need to work on situational awareness conflict resolution and training with their pistols far more then they do

@Darbypathos @StrixLeshay I'm a decent lawyer, I think about these things. I'm a civil litigator, so my LARPing/training also includes thinking these things through.
