Happy Birthday to Frédéric Bastiat—the 19th-century economist who mastered the art of the political roast. 🕯️ Over 170 years ago, Bastiat wrote a satirical petition on behalf of candlemakers, demanding the government block out the sun because it was “unfair competition.” Today, we still see the same economic fallacies wrapped up in new policy buzzwords. Bastiat taught us that good intentions don’t guarantee good economics, and that protectionism usually just leaves everyone in the dark.
