Why do countries like the US and UK have stronger border security than Nigeria, and what can Nigeria learn from them?
The US and UK rely heavily on a combination of:
โ Advanced surveillance technology (drones, sensors, biometrics)
โ Strong intelligence networks
โ Effective border management systems โ Inter-agency cooperation
โ Rapid response capabilities
Nigeria's security challenges are different and more complex:
โ Over 4,000km of largely porous land borders
โ Arms smuggling and illegal migration routes
โ High youth unemployment and poverty
โ Weak state presence in some rural communities
โ Corruption within critical institutions โ Ethnic, religious, and resource-based conflicts
โ Radical groups exploiting local grievances
What fuels the violence the most?
Research consistently points to a combination of weak governance, economic hardship, poor education access, and ineffective border control. Extremist groups thrive where the state is absent and opportunities are scarce.
The way forward:
โ Deploy modern surveillance technology across borders
โ Strengthen intelligence gathering and information sharing
โ Improve community policing and local intelligence
โ Invest in education and job creation
โ Develop border communities
โ Reform security institutions
โ Ensure swift prosecution of criminals and terrorists
Military action alone cannot solve the problem. Lasting security comes when citizens have opportunities, trust institutions, and see government presence in their daily lives.
The strongest border is not always the one with the highest fence. It's the one backed by effective governance, economic opportunity, and credible institutions and which the past and the present Government lacks.
I hope we get it right before it is too late than this ๐คท
