Astăzi se împlinesc 82 de ani de la marea tragedie din 4 aprilie 1944, când Bucureştiul a fost ţinta unui masiv bombardament al aviaţiei americane. Au fost vizate ţinte civile, cu deosebire zona Gării de Nord, dar şi partea centrală a oraşului, zone care nu aveau o justificare militară, deoarece frontul se afla departe, la peste 300 km, pe linia Iaşi-Chişinău, iar luptele încetaseră de la sfârşitul lunii martie. Tragedia a avut loc într-o marţi, pe la ora prânzului. Atunci, un număr de 220 bombardiere B-17 (numite Fortăreţe zburătoare) şi 93 bombardiere B-24 (Libertador) au intrat în spaţiul aerian al României, venind din Italia. Şi au făcut prăpăd. Iată o mărturie din acele vremuri făcută de Mihail Sebastian în jurnalul său a doua zi după masacru: “Ieri după-amiază am fost în cartierul Griviţa. De la Gară la bulevardul Basarab nicio casă – nici una – n-a scăpat neatinsă. Priveliştea e sfâşietoare. Se mai dezgroapă încă morţi, se mai aud încă vaiete de sub dărâmături. La un colţ de stradă trei femei boceau cu ţipete ascuţite, rupându-şi părul, sfâşiindu-şi hainele, un cadavru carbonizat, scos tocmai atunci de sub moloz. Plouase puţin dimineaţa şi peste toată mahalaua plutea un miros de noroi, de funingine, de lemn ars. Viziune, atroce, de coşmar. N-am mai fost în stare să trec dincolo de Basarab – şi m-am întors acasă, cu un sentiment de silă, oroare şi neputinţă”. Oficial, în bombardamentul din 4 aprilie 1944 au murit 2.942 de persoane şi au fost rănite alte 2.126. Morţii au fost îngropaţi într-o margine a Cimitirului Calvin, cu ceremonii amintind de funeralii naţionale. Cimitirul va purta numele “4 aprilie”, dar va fi desfiinţat în anii comunismului. Conform datelor oficiale, americanii au pierdut 10 avioane. Dacă de morţii noştri nu îşi mai aminteşte nimeni, în Bucureşti există însă doua monumente ridicate în memoria aviatorilor americani ucişi în misiunile de bombardament asupra oraşului: unul a fost realizat în 2002 în Cişmigiu (inaugurat de Adrian Nastase însoțit de ambasadorul SUA de pe atunci,Michael Guest), iar celălalt se află în Parcul Kiseleff şi a fost inaugurat în 2007.
