Photon metrology W/m2. Sun is life. Natural climate oscillations trump CO2 forcing. Temperature observations contradict alarmist models. Enjoy life in warmth.

Recognizing Good Wildfire Science vs Media Alarmists’ Scientific Distortions. After the sun sets, cooling temperatures can create a “night-time fire barrier” that causes wildfires to naturally die down and sometimes stop. Indeed, in some cases falling night-time temperatures cool the surface, reducing convective turbulence and the surface winds that spread fires. Cooling night temperatures also reduce the evaporative demand and thus reduce vegetative drying. However, some scientific studies have reported an increase in Overnight Burning Events (OBE) that are causing bigger fires by burning through the night. They speculate rising nighttime temperatures from climate change will further diminish the “night-time fire barrier” and increase OBEs. But there are other well studied dynamics that do naturally prevent a “night-time fire barrier”. Of the 23,557 fires analyzed between 2017 and 2020 by Lou (2026), just 4.6% (1,095 fires) had experienced OBEs. Furthermore, North American OBEs primarily happened only in the western mountains and Canada (see graphic), with the greatest concentration in California. The Diablo winds of northern California and the Santa Ana winds of southern California intensify during the night, naturally eliminating the “night-time fire barrier”. The top 10 deadliest California fires were driven by those winds and caused multiple OBEs. These winds emerge because the high deserts to the east cool faster than the oceans. That causes a pressure difference that intensifies as the night cools pushing fierce winds towards the ocean. The deadliest 2018 Camp fire that destroyed the town of Paradise was ignited by powerlines and driven downslope by Diablo winds. The 9thdeadliest 2025 Pacific Palisades fire was ignited by human causes and spread by the Santa Ana winds. Foehn winds (aka Chinooks) are also driven by natural pressure differences that can intensify downslope winds day or night, thus they can also destroy the “night-time fire barrier” in the western mountainous regions. Foehn winds, Diablo winds and Santa Ana winds are also very dry, causing relative humidity to fall further as the winds descend causing adiabatic heating as the pressure increases. This again is the opposite of what is expected from the “night-time fire barrier”. While it is also true that cooling night-time temperatures can increase relative humidity and moisten some vegetation, only thin dead grasses and branches (the 1-hour and 10-hour fuels) are sensitive to such day-night moisture changes. But thin dead grasses and branches lack the mass to sustain a fire through the night, so are not associated with OBEs. Increases in nighttime fire activity are most pronounced in larger wildfires that burn in drier regions with heavy fuels. Forested areas provide the 100-hour and 1000-hour fuels that can sustain a fire through the night. Those heavy fuels are not sensitive to night-time humidity changes. Those fuels require months to become dry enough to become flammable. Thus, California’s dry summer months, and dry La Nina conditions provide the weather that makes heavy fuels flammable. Accordingly, scientists have shown that droughts increase the occurrence of OBEs. In addition, accumulated needle litter, downed woody debris, and deep duff layers that have accumulated due to decades of fire suppression, also provide continuous fuel that smolders or burns slowly through the night. Smoldering combustion can last for days (or longer), then burst into flames when fanned by the winds. Peat fires in Canada are especially notorious for prolonged burning and explain many of Canada’s OBEs. Canada’s zombie fires can smolder all winter, then burst into flames when temperatures warm. In contrast to all this well understood wildfire physics, the AP’s Seth Borenstein is weaponizing OBE’s to fear monger climate change. As if all fires react the same, he posted, “Wildfires used to die down and even stop at night with cooler temperatures… But a study says climate change is making burning weather more around the clock in North America because night is becoming warmer and drier.” To trigger more fear Borenstein warns the USA now loses 11,000 square miles to wildfires each year due to global warming, then equated that burnt area to the size of Massachusetts. He carefully ignores scientific evidence that during the 1500-1800s, the Little Ice Age, wildfires consumed 226,562 square miles of forest annually – 20 times greater than burnt area today. No wonder the climate prophet of doom, Michael Mann, found Seth Borenstein to be his favorite useful idiot for promoting a climate crisis!
