According to the JAMB Policy Meeting, OAU is the best and most sought-after university in Nigeria. Before people from Lagos start shouting, calm down and read properly. LASU and UNILAG benefit massively from population density and location advantage. Lagos alone had over 320,000 UTME applicants in 2026, so naturally, schools inside Lagos will pull ridiculous application numbers because many students prefer staying close to home to avoid transportation and cost of living stress. What makes OAU different is that it is not sitting inside Nigeria’s biggest commercial hub, yet it was the closest to the two Lagos Universities. Students from all over the country are actively leaving their states to apply there because it is the best. Remove Lagos population advantage, and OAU is comfortably the people’s choice university in Nigeria.

Scoring above 300 in UTME doesn’t automatically prove you are brilliant

Just for the record, it’s majorly private and state universities that pushed for this. The goal is for them to have more students pick their schools, which will in turn bring in more money for them. No top university or polytechnic will admit anyone with less than 200 or 180.
