Fun fact, if central government builds these RoNS, the old state highway they often replace will be divested to local government and become a local road. Which means more roads to maintain and operate for local councils, and so more cost, and so rates go up!

@the_roose1 When the National Infrastructure Plan came out (the subtext of which was the RoNS are dogshit and don't do them), Bishop tried to walk back the Welly Tunnel thepost.co.nz/politics/36095… Next day Nicola Willis came out and said the government was absolutely going to do them.

@_ConnorSharp I do wonder if Bish is less keen on the RONS than Simeon Brown and the rest of the Nats, and is hoping he gets a good excuse to scale them back. He's always struck me as more cosmopolitan than the wider party

These projects were unaffordable and bad BEFORE the fuel crisis. Now they are just ludicrous. The one they might sign off still, is Warkworth to Te Hana. Which is still a mistake. Much better to rescope to something normal sized and funnel money into PT, walking, and cycling!

Is this what Simeon Brown meant by a 'sensible' approach to speed limits? Crashes which kill children? This child might not be dead if Brown and the government did not increase speed limits, against all evidence, to fuel an ideological culture war so they could rile up votes.

Mike Lee out here writing the foreword to the 'Auckland Ratepayers Alliance' (aka Taxpayers Union) alternate Council budget which would cut Auckland Council's capacity to do things. So yeahhhh he continues full steam ahead down the path of aligning with right wing groups

@RichardHills_ But seriously, give NZTA motorway builders carte blanche, with a political order to gold plate and supersized and you get the RoNS... Desperately need to be downscaled to an actual normal project... but wont, instead will try lock in $4billion+...

That interchange is the size of a small town and will deal with fewer vehicles a day then many of the local roads on the shore. What’s going on?

Warkworth to Te Hana - aside from the woeful traffic numbers here, surely we can just use roundabouts initially rather than ginormous spenny full motorway interchanges. Upgrade them later

Yeah anyways shout out politicians like @JulieAnneGenter and @HendoWest who want safe streets around schools (many others as well, but yeah!)

Reminder - Simeon Brown and Cabinet signed off a rule change that said if a local authority lowered speed limits with schools as one of the reasons, they had to increase them. Let me repeat that, if speed limits were lowered because a school was nearby, Brown forced an increase.

Oh look, more chickens coming home to roost for all the fucking atrocious decisions made in transport by the government (and especially Simeon Brown) rnz.co.nz/news/national/… Who could have predicted that this approach was stupid: greaterauckland.org.nz/2024/11/11/spe…

@arnie03 @metro_mim So I asked this the last two transport committees and they’re like it’s fine and we are factoring that in. But why is it like this? And I don’t even catch trains.

We could follow our own plans and strategies, evidence, public support, and all that other good stuff to prioritise walking, cycling, and public transport. OOORRRR we could not do that for *reasons* because cars somehow = good???

Oh yeah so senior executives in Auckland Transport are still doubling down on bringing back cars to Queen Street, despite receiving a ton of emails, the local board opposing, and ya know THE IMPENDING FUEL CRISIS THAT PROBABLY MEANS WE SHOULDN'T BE ENCOURAGING DRIVING RIGHT NOW
Connor Sharp@_ConnorSharp

I love listening to Auckland Transport, ignore the evidence, ignore strategy and vision documents, and overwhelming support to remove cars from Queen Street, and prioritise public transport, walking, and cycling in the City Centre, to instead listen to the likes of Viv Beck.
