@cocojelibean @InternetJulian If they didn’t overcharge on rent the tenant could save their own money to send their own children to school. Instead, the landlord has decided it’s not only their business, but to actually steal their tenants money and then dictate later how they should use it.

@InternetJulian i don’t think that’s what she meant. i think instead of pocketing the entire rent payments for whatever they want they’ve been intentionally saving some each month with the future intent of giving it to them. something they actually don’t have to do lol

it may not be the same amount every month. hence why no rent agreement is just “let me live my expenses as the landlord for 28 days and then the last couple days i’ll tell you what your rent is.” renting should yield some profit if you’re doing it correctly as a landlord, which involves budgeting. you need to account for being able to pay property tax at the end of the year, utilities monthly (if your tenant isn’t paying that), and a safety net for any repairs. clearly OP’s parents are good with budgeting bc they were able to do what they’re required to and still have money leftover to return to their tenants in the future. something i’ve personally never heard of landlords doing before
