In the last quarter of last year, a friend of mine—who used to be a developer but has since moved into something else—called me about a client looking for an app developer. I told him I was available, and he asked me to share some of my work. After I did, he said the client was impressed and wanted to meet me that same afternoon in town. I couldn’t make it and suggested we do a Google Meet instead, but the client insisted on a face-to-face meeting. We eventually agreed to meet the following afternoon. By then, I had been told the client was a pastor, and he now wanted us to meet in Thika. The next day, my friend drove me there. The client took us to a high-end hotel for lunch, and we discussed the project and terms. It was a streaming platform app he had already worked on, and in his words, he just needed it “ifanywe ikuwe mzuri kidogo, ing’arishwe” before going to market. His assistant a pastor also was there with us the entire even though he didn't understand much. The codebase was on his laptop and Google Drive—no version control like GitHub or GitLab. The React code was poorly written and disorganized. It wasn’t even properly modularized, and talking about clean architecture would have required a full lesson. He went on to talk about “growth opportunities” for me, even though the pay he was offering wasn’t even half of what I had earned in my previous job. Still, he painted a bright future and pushed me to accept KES 25K per month. Honestly, I agreed mostly to get out of the situation—I was already exhausted and just wanted to leave. He also expected a full-time commitment, reporting daily to an office he planned to set up somewhere around Ruiru or Juja. Surprisingly, he immediately sent me KES 30K via M-Pesa and asked me to give my friend 5K for transport. Since I had other projects on the side, I figured I could manage this one without too much risk. Two weeks later, he still hadn’t found an office, so I continued working from home. Once I got into the code, it became clear the situation was far worse than expected. Fixing the project would realistically take around 6 months. There were files with over 1,000 lines of code, no structure, and no standards as much when you ran the project it looked okay to the user. I began restructuring things—setting up a proper project foundation, creating a GitHub account for him, and documenting all the issues and what needed to be done. Meanwhile, he couldn’t even produce an NDA for the entire month. Instead, he kept calling to ask, “unaendelea vizuri na kazi,” and whenever I explained the technical issues, he would just say, “Wewe sasa ndio nimekupea hiyo kazi, ifanye.” After a month, I told him plainly that there was no way the project could be market-ready in three months. It needed a complete rewrite, at least 6–10 months of work, and a more realistic budget—around KES 80K to 100K per month. He asked to meet again so I could explain this in person. We met at another high-end hotel in Ruiru. This time, I saw the SUV he arrived in—he was driven by another pastor, his assistant. So as talked his car was being cleaned at a premium car wash in that hotel. I took about 10 minutes to explain everything while he casually scrolled through his Samsung Fold. When I finished, both him and his assistant were furious. They claimed I had wasted their time and money and done nothing for a whole month apart from “rewriting two files.” He even demanded a refund and threatened to take matters into his own hands.
